...and I am home by midnight, as Cinderella should have been.

Had a big scary nasty bug on the hood of my car on the way home. *shudder* I drove a bit fast in order to try to shake him off, but no dice. Horrible creature.

The song "Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows makes me think of [livejournal.com profile] vidicon.

I'm having a sciatica issue, and maybe a pinched nerve in the neck area. Owie. Also the fatigue is starting to hit. Must see where I'm going later tonight.

[livejournal.com profile] sistermaryeris -- Is she you? Your alter-ego?

In a way. All of my characters have bits and shards of me in them, but Julia's one of the six who carry the most of me - the other five being Lyric, Capri, Tessa, Alanna, and Katrianna.

[livejournal.com profile] tygerlilly -- How do you keep it going? Do you ever have to conquer writer's block to continue?

Oh yeah. The story always keeps going, mind you.... it's just that I have to fight myself to write it down sometimes!

[livejournal.com profile] preciousjade -- What should Shayara know about herself that she doesn't know, and how would she find out?

Actually, the city's names is Shayara, the character's name is Julia (I'm assuming you mean my main protagonist, seen in the icon here).... she should know that she's both the foreordained leader of her people - and that she is damn well her own person. And that that doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. As for how she finds out.... that's a couple of years of story!

[livejournal.com profile] mendoza -- I'm a nosy little geek. I want to know more about that mysterious, missing seventh house. My inner narcissist wants to know if there's a house I'd fit in.

It'll be a while before I tell about that long-gone House.... :) As for which one you'd be in, I'll need to evaluate it - nothing springs immedately to mind, but I'm sure it'll come to me!

[livejournal.com profile] softlywhispered -- what color is the water in that world?

Same as it is here. Shayara takes place in a world almost identical to our own.... there's a New York there, a California, a Utah.... and just one additional city, swathed in fog and mystery, that no one without Dasaroi blood knows is there. Everything outside the city itself is Earth-normal.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
P.S. - It's settled. Around 2 AM, I'm going to [livejournal.com profile] vidicon's, and will be on his webcam. I'll let you know when I get there.
[livejournal.com profile] arien_mommy -- What other forms of art are you interested in? Other than Writing?
Primarily music...... I connect in a very primal way with music.
[livejournal.com profile] lanthinel -- What was the inspiration for the name Elayna for your daughter?
I've always loved the name "Elena" - I gave it to Kat's daughter in Shayara. :) There's a 50% chance that Elayna's biological father was the rapist, and 50% that it was my then-boyfriend, Layne. I took the name I loved and blended it with Layne's.
[livejournal.com profile] vixyish -- I'm considering having kids in a year or two. Give me advice. Anything. Tell me what you think I should know.
Don't drink coffee during pregnancy. Get someone to rub your feet a lot. Tell them you don't want an episiotomy. Buy a Diaper Genie.
When the kid gets here - support the head. Breastfeed - it gives them enormous health advantages and promotes parent-child bonding.
Look at your child sometimes and just be in the moment and let yourself overflow with the love you feel for them. Hug them often. Tell them you love them every day. Get to know them - they'll be really cool little people.
[livejournal.com profile] melvh -- what does Elayna want to be when she grows up?
A teacher. :)
[livejournal.com profile] mermaidblue -- What are you doing later tonight?
Hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] vidicon!
[livejournal.com profile] brother_bliss -- why do female comic book hero look like they have boobs defie gravity?
Because most comic writers and artists are men. Some male artists draw realistic women, most notably Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise)
[livejournal.com profile] lanthinel -- Who're the inspirations for the writing and/or artwork?
The artwork's not by me, so I can't really speak to it - there's some manga influence in how I imagine it. Writing... I don't know! I don't think my writing really reads like anyone else's.....
[livejournal.com profile] vixyish -- How are you set for artists these days? ;)
Well, I think I have [livejournal.com profile] lee_in_limbo! I haven't seen anything yet, though.... *looks up north*
[livejournal.com profile] crisis -- How does it's monetary system hit the little man, and what does the little man have to say about it?
Hm. This is not something I've ever given real thought to. :(
[livejournal.com profile] melvh -- why is Kieran afraid to find out if Alanna is truly the Lishaya?
Because he's destined to love and be the partner of the true Lishaya. Alanna is cruel, petty and mean and vicious - and if he feels that spark of recognition, that connection.... he doesn't want to develop feelings for someone whose every action he loathes.
I know it's a huge departure from established continuity, but I'm really enjoying the new Teen Titans series so far! Totally different look and feel, but it's enjoyable in and of itself.
Hello to new readers [livejournal.com profile] blogforferrets and [livejournal.com profile] gbdances!
Time stretches out before me like a really stretchy thing, man. I am officially up past my bedtime.... but it's for a good cause. *chugs coffee*
I have a Frumpy the Clown sketch by Judd Winick on my desk. He was doing sketches at the Humor in Comics panel at DragonCon last year, just scribbling them as other writers talked. At the end of the panel, he said, "Oh, anyone who wants these can have them."
There are advantages to being small - I cut through crowds like a hot knife through butter. I was the first to the table and quickly sifted through, holding ones I was interested in and letting the others fall to the table. There were only two of recognizable characters... Frumpy and Batman. The others were just random-person sketches. I took Frumpy.
Now you know.
Incidentally, Judd's a great guy - if you see him at a Con, definitely go talk to him. And you need to read Frumy the Clown and Barry Ween.
Going to Vid's now. Will be on cam.
[livejournal.com profile] dianthus -- Why do you blog so much?
I started the blog to keep in touch with long-distance friends - [livejournal.com profile] stronae said he missed hearing about my day, and now he gets to. :) Early on, I got into the habit of putting it all out there, whenever a thought occurred to me, and I've stuck with that!
[livejournal.com profile] snowmerlin -- what's your fave pair of undies? (i've no idea why that popped in my head. hehe)
These.
[livejournal.com profile] piperdawn -- How real is Shayara for you and do you now or have you ever entertained the idea it could be a past or alternate reality life?
I find it to be a very real imaginary world, if that makes sense! You know how Native Americans explained thunder by telling stories about the Thunderbird? I think Shayara is my way of explaining things to myself.
[livejournal.com profile] crisis -- What would have been your ideal place to grow up (topographically) had you not grown up where you had, and what would a complete change of seasons been like?
Ooooh. Massachusetts. I would still have had the beach, but I'd also have gotten snow! I didn't see now until I was 17, in the wilderness survival program. I literally danced when I first saw snow - it was just so incredible to me.
[livejournal.com profile] mumbi -- I'm curious whether any of your work colleagues read/know about your journal
My boss and co-secretary know I have an online journal, but not on what site or what name I use. And they're not computer-inclined, so I'm not too worried. [livejournal.com profile] jet_li_wannabe is one of our grad students. I'm at [livejournal.com profile] vidicon's, barricaded with him in his cozy warm office with a really big coffee mug and some highly questionable boxes with biohazard stickers on 'em.
Vid: "From here until 7, we can write about anything. Because nobody - nobody - will be reading it."
Heh.
So. There's a webcam in this room. It's pointed at Vid. Frankly, I'm a bit nervous about the whole webcam thing.
I'm not flashing the webcam. Not gonna do it. *shakes head vigorously* I flashed [livejournal.com profile] photognome tonight, but I'm not flashing anyone else, uh-uh.
My usual bedtime is around 11 PM. So. I'm getting the tiniest bit loopy.
May I reiterate that I hate Windows and IE? Thank you. I do. But this option allows [livejournal.com profile] yendi to sleep and allows me to hang out with one of my bestest friends, who happens to look superhot in his Utilikilt.
The coffeemaker sounds like one of the pig guards being eaten by the Rancor.
For ten minutes.
I took my hairclip out and did the sexy librarian headshake.
Vid: "You should flash the camera."
Me: "Mmmmaybe."
Vid: "I should flash it. Show off my leopard-print thong."
Me: "Dude. If you do, I'll flash my Fantastic Four panties."
Party over here, y'all.
Aw shit, I'm on cam. And he keeps flashing me. Purple leopard-print thong. Goodness gracious me.
Hey, questions!
[livejournal.com profile] yashara -- What actually inspired Shayara?
It's just always been there. Really. I've been dreaming in the city since I was ten, and the story just started to come to me when I was about 14.
[livejournal.com profile] reprobayt -- Is it the only story in your head or are there more waiting to be birthed?
There are others. :) Shayara's my big overarching story, and it's at the forefront of my brain - but it's not all that I've got... :)
[livejournal.com profile] sophieaxelson -- How did it all start? A story about how it all developed (what made it take so long before you started writing etc). Most people who read your journal probably knows, but now that you're on the RAINN homepage and all, more people might be interested.
Well, I've said above how it started, but....
When I first started writing this story, it was about five teenagers travelling in and out of a fantasy world. That concept was discarded, and I went with another five teenagers - Marvel mutants of my own creation, basically - on the run. With cameos by two of the kids from the original story - Jason, and Annie Farrell. Everyone from that group has survived into the current story, tangentially or not... but the main characters are now the children of those characters, another generation altogether.
Age 14-15: First concept
Age 16-17: Second concept.
Age 17-present: Current concept, but with a shift in main character from Katrianna to Julia.
I wrote consistently until the rape, when I was 20.... and that silenced me for 7+ years. Total paralyzing writers block. Which I finally pushed through, determined not to let my rapist keep that part of me. The intro story on the website was the first writing I'd done in 7+ years.
Gimme more questions!
I'm trying to not be horribly self-conscious about being on cam. *blush* And yes, [livejournal.com profile] wolfieboy, I'm back on. :) Watch me futz around with my hair! Thrill to my one-fingered typing and my coffee-sipping!
I have a bucket o' coffee. Reeeally big mug.
Vid: "It's the coffee bucket. It should be red and white stripes. Chicken-flavored coffee."
He has the dregs in his mug. It looks like motor oil.
[livejournal.com profile] wolfieboy has just sponsored me! I'm up to $1,588.50!
Hey, more questions!
[livejournal.com profile] mycroftca -- Milk or Dark chocolate?
Dark. Always dark.
[livejournal.com profile] solledrache -- Similar music question... If you had to pick songs to "narrate" your life which ones would you choose? and why?
Oooh. Lots. Hm. "Wingstock" by Ashley MacIsaac. "Drowning" by Boiled in Lead. "We Shall Come Home" and "This Town", by Oysterband. "Black Friday Rule and "If I ever leave this world alive" by Flogging Molly. So many....
[livejournal.com profile] raptorgirl -- How does one obtain a cult following?
Believe it or not, I have no clue.
No one ever believes me.
[livejournal.com profile] wolfieboy -- When will you make it to the NorthWest?
When a rich relative dies and leaves me all their money.
Seriously - I'd love to go. There are so many people out there I want to meet! But it's not an expense I can justify at this time. :(
[livejournal.com profile] shalie -- What is your favorite time period and why?
The future. I'm in love with Possibility.
[livejournal.com profile] elfboy999 -- Are you going to DragonCon this year? If so, is there any particualr panel or guest that is the reason for you going?
Yes, I am! No particular panel or guest, though; I haven't even really reviewed 'em yet. For me, it's a social thing as much as anything else... I get to see good friends like [livejournal.com profile] morenasangre and [livejournal.com profile] farren who I rarely see otherwise.
Let's see how linear I can be!
The Coffee Bucket is topped off. Appropriately enough, it has Too Much Coffee Man on it.
Whee?
Vid: "I think more coffeepot porn is in order."
The thing is, we're always like this. We just think we're funnier at the moment due to the lack of sleep and abundance of caffeine. We're freakin' adorable.
Food! Cookies. Cookies are food.
Vid: "I have a spare taser next door."
Me: "Ummmmm.... I don't play those games."
Vid: "Well, not twice. Those fuckers hurt."
*looks at clock* Shit. Not 9 yet. Can I fast-forward? Please?
Me: "Heh. I just flashed the camera."
Vid, whose back was to me: "You gotta whistle or something when you do that."
Me: "You've seen it before."
Vid: "Yeah, but I wanna see it every time."
Did anyone see me with the "HI MOUSIE" sign? That was for [livejournal.com profile] xanadumalion. I'd do one for each of you, but I got kinda loopy off themarker fumes, so that would probably be unwise.
Vid: *imitates me typing*
Me: "Just cuz I'm faster with one finger than you are..."
My brain catches up to my mouth....
Vid laughs.
Vid: "Wow. You are BEET red. I'm the one who's supposed to be doing that."
Me: "You?!? I'm - I'm -"
Vid: "I'm the sweet and innocent one!"
Me: "Oh who the HELL do you think you're kidding!?" *laugh* "I'm posting this."
Vid: "Oh, I see how this works. You provoke me to get material!"
[livejournal.com profile] uofmwalton -- So do you keep up with/watch any sports?
[livejournal.com profile] dreamcowgirl -- What is one thing you do for yourself that makes you feel girlie?
When I wear the long flowy skirts....
[livejournal.com profile] yashara -- What's your favorite mixed drink?
Mudslides! Also Kahla & cream.
[livejournal.com profile] xanadumalion -- in what order should one eat M&Ms?
Hmmm. What colors are involved again? The brown ones first. Then yellow, orange, red, green, blue. Those are the colors, right?
[livejournal.com profile] reprobayt -- There's a box of 'adult magazines' under your bed...what would I want to borrow?
I haven't got any. :( That's [livejournal.com profile] libidoergosum's, he loaned it to me...
Heh. Lovely. The cunt that stalked me and my friends, spread malicious rumors about me, and stole several hundred dollars' worth of books from me is here. For those who've read far back enough: Decaturspy and Mightyweasel. Yeah, her. Peachy keen! Had I known that thing was going to be here, I would not have come. Ah well. Just rank idiocy and jealousy on her part. But I do plan to see what can be done in small claims court about the theft.
No, I didn't start anything; I didn't say a word. Because I'm better than her. By far. *decisive nod*
About the venom and sustained on-cam agita. Just a very unpleasant shock. *sigh* This person was the cause of a months-long intense bout of PTSD due to the constant harassment on and off LJ, stalking, hacking of e-mail, spreading rumors that destroyed a five-year-long friendship, and she heavily contributed to the destruction of my romantic relationships with [livejournal.com profile] yendi and [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat, as well as damaging my friendship with [livejournal.com profile] glenn5. The thing was, the whole time that was going on, I didn't know who was stalking me, just that someone was. I didn't know if it was male or female, potential rapist or, well, potential rapist was really the first thing on my mind.
I wrote the account of my rape and its aftereffects upon finding out it was just a crazy jealous female. To try to show how it felt, being stalked for months. Constant hypervigilance to the point of health problems. The destruction of relationships.
Vid thinks some mastermind was behind it - gave the bitch the tools and told her what to do. I don't think that makes her any less guilty.
Ironic that I should be confronted with this as I'm blogging for RAINN, no?
EDIT: I *am* okay. I'm calm. This is just something I really could've done without.
Three more hours. I'm so tired. In danger of nodding off, really. Seriously. 'S bad. Coffee's just making me jittery, not any less tired.
Shayara questions!
[livejournal.com profile] crackerbob -- I must admit, I'm a bit curious to know what house I'd fit in.
I'd definitely have to get to know you better before making a call on that....
[livejournal.com profile] azurelunatic -- What would you say is the scariest/freakiest bit of it? Either place or sequence.
The night of the Purges. Definitely.
[livejournal.com profile] ardaniel -- How much of the language of the Dasaroi do you have codified? Does it just come to you, or does it require deliberate construction?
Parts of it come to me, parts require construction. It's a syllabic language. Ki in a kin-bond. Ri is a soulbond. Kiri'totharan means souls that are bound as kin through this life and all lives. In the romance kinda way (sib-bond is kiri'dalrein.
Some of it has condensed over the years. Shayara was once ki'Lishaya'ra.
[livejournal.com profile] spc476 -- So do the proles think about all the ... um ... drama? the ruling juanta is going through?
Yup. All members of a House are affected by the actions of their Kithrayn or Kithraya..... it's definitely kept in mind.
Problem is: They believe in me.
And I have to be better than this. Because I'm not just me. I affect other people. I have responsibilities, whether I asked for 'em or not.
Vid: "I really have no dignity left at all." He moons me. "See, because that's where I'd keep it. Where my tail was." *plaintive sigh* "I miss my tail." Pause. "Hey, 'The Asshole Song' is on!"
Vid: "Fuuuuuuuck."
Hey. I can answer some questions. I'm cool like that. I'm hip like that cuz I swing like that.
[livejournal.com profile] sophocles -- How does one find an artist who wants to convert my brain doodles- screenplays mostly into something that might resemble a comic?
I got my current artist because he thought his girlfriend might like to have sex with me. You could try to work that angle.
[livejournal.com profile] jeni -- What is your favorite memory?
I had a bit of a rough start with Elayna. I'd never had any experience with kids.... she latched onto the breast wrong, I was clumsy with diapering... horribly frustrating.
Then one day when she was about three months old, I was breastfeeding her in the cradle position, and she was feeding peacefully... and she suddenly looked past me to the window, to the sky. Her huge blue eyes looking out at the vast blue sky, the world around her, sun making her gossamer hair sparkle.
Perfection.
[livejournal.com profile] azurelunatic -- What do you think about my relationship/friendship with Darkside? Sweet, epic, freaky, et cetera?
I find it interesting to watch, because you're the only person I know who's as fiercely analytical about relationships as I am.
[livejournal.com profile] ardaniel -- So, why Starfire in particular of all the Titans?
An alien attempting to get by in an unfamiliar place, where no one is like her and she can't quite understand them.... the nymphet, the sex symbol... who goes into berserker rages.
We have stuff in common... :)
[livejournal.com profile] spc476 -- David Lynch's Dune, or Sci-Fi Channel's Dune?
Frank Herbert's Dune. The books.
[livejournal.com profile] kaifoxx -- Did ya take a peek at the list of questions I left on my journal for ya's? :)
U.S. Clears New Use for Lilly Growth Hormone
By Lisa Richwine
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. regulators on Friday approved use of a growth hormone for boosting the height of children who are short but in good health.
Eli Lilly's hormone, Humatrope, has been sold in the United States since 1987 and used for treating children with growth-hormone deficiencies. With the new approval, Indianapolis-based Lilly will be able to market Humatrope for short children with normal levels of the hormone and no evidence of a disease that stunts growth.
The FDA said it approved the treatment for the shortest 1.2 percent of children. For 10-year-old boys and girls, that would correspond to a height of less than 4 feet 1 inch. Their expected adult height without treatment would be less than 5 feet 3 inches for men and 4 feet 11 inches for women.
Humatrope "can enable the majority of these children to achieve an adult height that is within the medically normal range," Lilly spokeswoman Judy Kay Moore said.
An advisory committee in June voted 8-2 to recommend approving Humatrope for the new use after debating whether children who are otherwise healthy should be given multiple injections every week for years in order to grow what may amount to a few inches. At that meeting, Lilly argued that short children often face teasing and bullying, as well as social isolation as adults, and therefore needed a treatment option.
This so SO wrong. I cannot begin to tell you how horribly wrong this is. To think that perfectly healthy children will be tortured by the medical equivalent of being stretched on the rack just because they're an inch or two below the federal standard... and think of the emotional consequences to these kids.
If you're as horrified as I am, tell Eli Lilly. I'm going to.
