Still crazy stuffed up, weak, hacking cough, difficulty breathing. Blech. Adam feels better today, at least.

Why I love Joss Whedon
Let's Watch A Girl Get Beaten To Death. This is not my blog, but I don’t have a blog, or a space, and I’d like to be heard for a bit.

Last month seventeen year old Dua Khalil was pulled into a crowd of young men, some of them (the instigators) family, who then kicked and stoned her to death. This is an example of the breath-taking oxymoron “honor killing”, in which a family member (almost always female) is murdered for some religious or ethical transgression. Dua Khalil, who was of the Yazidi faith, had been seen in the company of a Sunni Muslim, and possibly suspected of having married him or converted. That she was torturously murdered for this is not, in fact, a particularly uncommon story. But now you can watch the action up close on CNN. Because as the girl was on the ground trying to get up, her face nothing but red, the few in the group of more than twenty men who were not busy kicking her and hurling stones at her were filming the event with their camera-phones.

There were security officers standing outside the area doing nothing, but the footage of the murder was taken – by more than one phone – from the front row. Which means whoever shot it did so not to record the horror of the event, but to commemorate it. To share it. Because it was cool.

Continues at the link.

Cool!
The address book desk. Underneath the desk I have stuck a grid of RFID tags, and on the top surface, the same grid of post-it notes. With the standard Nokia Service Discovery application it is possible to call people, send pre-defined SMSes or load URLs by touching the phone to each post-it on the desk. On the post-its themselves I have hand-written the function, message and the recipient. This is somewhat like a cross between a phone-book, to-do list and temporary diary, with notes, scribbles and tea stains alongside names.

Initial ideas were to spraypaint or silkscreen some of the touch icons to the desk surface, and I may well do that at some point. But for quick prototyping it made sense to use address labels or post-it notes that can be stuck, re-positioned and layered with hand-written notes.

Hey, baby - is that Stilton you're wearing?
The makers of the famously pungent Stilton blue cheese have launched their own perfume... It claims to "recreate the earthy and fruity aroma" of the cheese "in an eminently wearable perfume". The perfume, blended by a Manchester-based aromatics company, features a "symphony of natural base notes including yarrow, angelica seed, clary sage and valerian". It was commissioned by the Stilton Cheesemakers' Association as part of a campaign to persuade more people to eat their product.

My partythingie.
Will be Friday. What's a good start time? 7? Give everyone time to get home from work?

Daily Science
Jellyfish Lake, on the island nation of Palau, was once connected to the ocean through an underwater tunnel. At some point the tunnel closed off, trapping jellyfish in the saltwater lake. With no natural predators, the jellyfish population exploded, leaving a breathtaking (if a bit scary) underwater ecology.

And that is all for now.

Dear reader,

As you may have noticed, Shayara.com hasn't been up in a while. Reason being, it was being hosted for free, and the institution that discovered that it was hosting it cut us off.

Yarr! I am a pirate.

It's important to us that we get Shayara.com back up and running. The site has been totally redesigned with lots of cool stuff, including that clickable map of the city. We'll have a forum and a store, too.

All of this requires, well, monies. Filthy lucre. And [livejournal.com profile] m0usegrrl and I are starving artists of the unemployed and/or barely employed variety.

The hosting we want is Crazy Domain Insane on DreamHost. Two-year prepaid is $190.80; one-year prepaid is $119.40; and month-to-month would be $59.90 to set up and $9.95/mo thereafter. Obviously, two-year prepaid would be ideal.

We do not have $200 lying around here. I checked under the bed and everything!

So, dear reader, we are asking for your help. Please, please, throw a few bucks in the hat to get us up and running. I've got the story, she's got the art - all we need is that wad of cash to get started.

In exchange, you'll get -
* Well, everyone will get a kickass webcomic.
* All sponsors will be listed in Shayara's post office, with the link of your choice (within reason - no hardcore porn!)
* Special content will be provided for Silver ($25), Gold, ($50), and Platinum ($100) Level sponsors. Mouse and I haven't figured out what that'll be yet.

Please help us get our story out there. Any amount helps.

Sponsor Shayara!

Thank you!

EDIT: We are there. It's covered. Wow, you guys... thank you so much. :) *is teary*

I went to go walk around town, do some errands. Came back, and -

You guys have paid for the hosting.

*stunned blinking*

Holy crap. I wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly. I was expecting to have to hit the credit card. But... it's all paid for. Shayara.com will go up fully sponsored.

Thank you. I just... yeah. *sits down, still a bit stunned*

Anyone going to Convergence this weekend who doesn't care about BPAL or wouldn't mind decanting a bit of the exclusive scents for me? *hopeful look*

Storyville's one of my all-time favorites. I've smelled Voodoo Queen once (thankfully for my wallet, it didn't work on me), but have never smelled Doc Buzzard or the TAL exclusives...

So. Yes. I would *really* love to try the Convergence XIII exclusives, and I will be incredibly grateful if you could help that happen. Y'know, if you're going to be in Portland this weekend.

The parade exclusive is Crumpet Rebellion. Crumpet Rebellion! Must have!

EDIT: You do not need a badge/laminate to get to the vendors, to get the three "normal" exclusives. Just the Crumpet Rebellion. You need a Phoenix Parade flyer for that.

It would be nice if I could sit at my computer long enough to get some writing done, but I get all stuffed-up when I sit. *sniffle* *hack* *cough* Want to post something today that's not just "gimme!"

Speaking of which: Mouse and I are hashing out what sponsors get. So far:

Platinum sponsors ($100 and up): You get drawn into the comic. Not major roles, mind you - those are all filled! But you can be hanging out at the coffeehouse, at the farmer's market - there are options. If you've donated $100 or more (so far this is [livejournal.com profile] auryn29a and [livejournal.com profile] ysabel - we love you guys! EDIT: and [livejournal.com profile] mendoza and [livejournal.com profile] i_descend! We love you too!), you may send your picture or a description of how you'd like to be drawn to Miz Mouse.

Gold sponsors ($50-$99): You get a T-shirt! (Platinum sponsors get the shirt too, of course.) Mouse and I are trying to decide whether you just get a free shirt of your choice of design, or if there'll be a super-special sponsors-only tee. Is there a general desire for an exclusive tee? Shirt designs so far are the redesigns of Julia and Napalm; in the works, an image of the city gates, with the fog-shrouded city rising beyond them, and one of Fenris. Who else do you want on a shirt?

Silver sponsors ($25-$49): Still working on something for you guys. Ideas?

All sponsors: Mentions on the new website, either at the post office or on the bulletin board at Tyka's coffeehouse...

And Shayara.com e-mail addresses.

Yep. Be whoever you want @shayara.com. Except song or mouse. We've got dibs on those. ;)

So, yeah. I'm excited. :) I have to verify my account before I can accept y'all's payments, but as soon as the micropayments hit my account, the website's going up - a placeholder until Mouse and I put finishing touches on the real thing, but it'll be there, there will be info and art and... yeah. :)

Hi!

Now I need to finish the primer and the new, starring-Donna intro comic.
