shadesong: (Everything hurts/Doesn't work)
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 08:13 am
Had a tickle in my throat yesterday afternoon that devolved to "oh crap" by the time I went to bed; woke up with morning with a full-on hacking chest cold.

It actually hurts to breathe right now. And walking across the room is comical.

So today gets spent in bed, not rocking out.

Dammit.

It's the Green 17 Tour, at least, which means not as much Flogging Molly as a regular show. And they will come back here. After their world tour. Probably. :(

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] sleigh!

Hello to new reader [livejournal.com profile] antonstrout!

Medical
Pretty well covered in previous post. Chest has been colonized by snot goblins, and they tore up my throat on the way down.I must've picked this up from the plane...

Parties
If I rest,I'll probably be okay in time for the parties this weekend. Right?

Wind Tunnel Dreams
"Apostate" was the final WTD for February. Yes,I should've finished it on Feb.7. This February has been made of fail, though.I will do better next month. Thanks for the sponsorship, [livejournal.com profile] autonand [livejournal.com profile] vampry!

Also, I finished "Hey Elizabeth", so sponsors who want the complete story, please let me know; sponsors who want the whole story, please hit the shiny PayPal button. I'm very pleased with it. This was one of those experiences where it felt more like channeling than writing; what transpires in Elizabeth's eighth and ninth years is Just Right, and fits seamlessly. I don't often praise my own work -I'm more likely to pick at it! So when I say that I thinkI did really well, that's saying something.

March's WTD will be a return to the seven-part story format, and is tentatively titled "Flying Lessons".

WTD Analysis for people examining cyberfunded creativity
I made a fraction this month of what I made last month; I think it's due to the ball-dropping. People seem to sponsor more when it's one complete story or when it's a marathon, like November. (Will I do a marathon month again? Maybe, but not soon.)

Daily Science
Researchers had developed a new nanoscale crystal called ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framerwork) that can trap 80x its volume of carbon dioxide.
This particular crystal has excited proponents of carbon-capturetechnology for its ability to absorb CO2 and nothing else, but the process that head researcher Omar Yahgi and his lab used to develop the compound is potentially much more significant.
Yahgi’s lab employs automation techniques frequently found in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry to rapidly test crystal samples on a scale not previously possible, which has led to an avalanche of new discoveries. At one point, the technique was yielding so many potentially useful compounds that Yahgi had to ask his students to stop so they could publish their findings. Possible uses for crystals that can selectively absorb specific molecules are numerous, including military applications and hydrogen-fuel storage for green vehicles.

Plans
Rest, reading, writing.

Some more info, unearthed by [livejournal.com profile] lightcastle:

Comissatio
Comissatio refers to conversations with drinking in the late hours. The Latin word convivium refers to "living together", which Cato the Elder declared the better choice than the Greek work symposium,
meaning "drinking together." Younger men inclined to the Greek view, where dinner proper was followed with a drinking revel. This was referred to as comissatio or compotatio. These gatherings were disapproved due to the amount of wine consumed, lower tone of occasion, questionable amusements, and adoption of certain Greek
customs. Such customs included the use of perfumes and flowers, selection of a master of the revels, and a different method of drinking. Perfumes and flowers were used in belief that they delayed intoxication. After dessert and wine, diners anointed themselves with perfumes and put on crowns of flowers. Roses were most popular, thus, it became associated with wine-drinking.

Master of the Revels
The "Master" was chosen by the highest dice tossed. He usually called on some god or sweetheart for luck when throwing the dice. He was then declared the REX BIBENDI - master of the revels (magister, arbiter).

This person determined the water:wine ratio, the drinking rules(dubbed "leges insanae" by Horace), entertainment by the guests, and the penalties/forfeits for rule-breaking.

So who's bringing the flowers, and who's bringing the wine? (Red,please!) We have dice and perfume. :)

Another note: I was so not kidding about declaiming poetry and playing music. If you play, bring your instrument! If you write, bring your work! If you sing, sing! If you dance, dance! If you do none of these things, bring your favorite poems or stories by other people to read.

If this goes well, it could be the first in a series.I can totally see throwing these things to honor visitors like [livejournal.com profile] s00j and [livejournal.com profile] asim.
