I'm in a haze of busy, but it's mostly the good kind of busy. BARCC stuff, house stuff, sekrit project stuff. My current agita: my parents will be here tomorrow! The house is not ready! But I'll be working on that for a chunk of today (when I'm not writing and doing one of the sekrit projects) and tomorrow.
No, we still haven't heard from the old landlords. Patience is. But the new ones seem awesome; we had a boiler problem and they sent someone to fix it ASAP.
I told my parents that I feel like we were living in a Mad Magazine fold-in, and now we have been folded out! That's how much more space we have. I walk through the house and I keep walking! And am still in the house!
One of the things I find interesting about the house is that several bits of it seem frozen in time. There are little-girl dresses from the 40s or 50s in the attic, and a wedding veil, and a newspaper from 1934. One wall of the laundry room is set up as a shop - tools, nails, all manner of stuff, but all from the 1950s - I'm pretty sure that stack of Popular Mechanics from 1957 has been undisturbed this entire time. Time capsule!
We've come to realize that, not only did we see the ad for the house pretty much the minute it hit Craigslist, we may have been the only tenants to check it out - and we're likely the first non-owners to live in the upstairs. Ever. The house was built in the 20s, and we know the landlords' parents lived in it until they passed away - which, in the case of their mother, is less than a year ago. A cousin or family friend was living in the downstairs in-law apartment until late January.
I have done Google research on the deceased owners (hence me knowing when the mother passed away). They were married over 75 years! The husband was 105 when he passed away a few years ago! And they lived here the whole time, when they weren't wintering in Florida, not far from where I grew up.
I bet they had a lot of stories.
We're going to send the new landlords a thank-you note with rent. We really like this place.
