Today is my birthday! I am 39!
I did not think I'd live to see 21, so every birthday is super-exciting for me. Look! I'm still here!
I am going to shower, and then I am going to bake my birthday cake (chocolate lavender cake!), and then hopefully Judah will be awake and he will make me waffles. I have decided that the theme of today is waffles. Waffles for breakfast, chicken and waffles for dinner.
The very first Boston birthday party I had was before I lived here. I'd fallen in love with Boston through Arisia, and I had so many friends up here that I just started having bonus birthday parties here. We had a ridiculous time and got to bed very late (everyone was sleeping over, pretty much), and we were giggly, and I was saying "And in the morning? I'm makin' waffles!" like Donkey in Shrek.
And I woke up to find
lbitw and
jenphalian bringing in a dozen boxes of Eggo waffles! Which prompted
slipjig to make a card for our brand-new 1,000 Blank White Cards deck: "The power to Make. Waffles. Happen."
I glory in my power. Mwahaha.
So, y'know, years passed, and I was diagnosed with celiac, and I was sad in the face, because waffles. I can't find a decent freezer waffle that's gluten-free and soy-free; they all rely on soy flour. There's one, but it tastes like cardboard and sadness.
But, being me, I found a way!
rosefox and
sinboy gave me some of their extra gluten-free cookbooks, and one of them was Cooking for Isaiah, which had a lot of waffle recipes and waffle-centric recipes. All I needed was a waffle iron! (Lay off about the acquisition of unitaskers. You can eat Eggos. I have to work harder.) So I got a waffle iron for Chanukah in 2011 and it is, no shit, one of the single best gifts I have ever received.
Gingerbread waffles. Savory waffles. Pumpkin waffles. Bacon waffles. We do some highly experimental waffling these days. And it is all safe for me.
The power to make. waffles. happen.
Today we'll be making our actually-probably-famous-by-now chicken & waffles for dinner. Baked chicken with salt and pepper over savory waffles (including Auntie Arwen's smoked sweet paprika), with a maple bacon cayenne topping.
Waffles.
Happy birthday, me.
