There are many different types of poly: polyamorous, polyfidelity, poly-intimate, co-amory, etc. When used as just "poly", it usually refers to all of these in a generic sense.

Poly is *consensual* and *knowing* multiple partners. It's not poly if your other partner(s) don't a) know about it and b) consent.
