So I told Miss Kid about the gerbils. Well, I kinda had to; she'll be back home before they're weaned.
Me: Guess what? Two things.
Elayna: What? What?
Me: Well, the first thing is... Woody's not a boy.
Elayna, calling out to Grandpa: Grandpa! Guess what! Woody's female!
Me: Guess how we know?
Elayna: How?
Me, pausing for dramatic effect: Because she had babies!
Elayna: Omigosh!!!
We discussed the disposition of the gerbils, agreeing that they would go to good homes that don't have cats or "have cats that don't like to chase rodents", per Elayna.
And she would very much like to keep just one baby gerbil. Which is a wish that I'm actually inclined to grant, simply because it's so reasonable. She agrees that we don't have room for all seven babies. She would just like one, please.
This is how mature this kid is. Barely 7, and she uses "female" instead of "girl", "rodent" instead of just "gerbil", and she understands and agrees completely that we cannot keep all the babies.
I love my kid. :)

Bret's dad raises snakes. Really really big snakes. Like over 200 lb. 16-24 foot snakes. So he keeps rats to feed them. I love the silky little rats when they first get their downy, silky little fur, just as their eyes are beginning to open. They are debateably the most adorable things known to man.
