Damn, you guys posted a lot last night.

So okay. My weekend of concerts:

Friday: Concrete Blonde (free On the Bricks concert!)
Saturday: Carbon Leaf
Sunday: Great Big Sea, Seven Nations, and Young Dubliners

Who's coming with? I know [livejournal.com profile] glenn5 expressed interest in Concrete Blonde - anyone else? [livejournal.com profile] ilexx, you should see if Justin wants to meet up with us! :) Oh, and I'll be playing the other bands' CDs at the gaming session tonight so you can all hear what they sound like; both Saturday's and Sunday's concerts are general admission, so you don't need to worry about buying a ticket *with* us if you want to go with us. :)

gah. how much are the tix for Great Big Sea?
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:22 am (UTC)
For you? Free. Please accept this concert as your welcome-back-to-Atlanta gift. :)
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:53 am (UTC)
*giggle*
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 06:37 am (UTC)
Woohoo! I've seen 3 out of 5 of the people you're seeing! Cool beans! Maybe those people who tell me I go to a lot of concerts are right...

And keep in mind with Carbon Leaf, bouncy is the theme!
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 06:43 am (UTC)
Bouncy is *always* the theme with me. :) You should've seen me at TMBG!
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:12 am (UTC)
Well, there's that too! You're so right!

They bounce on stage though. It's impressive really.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:47 am (UTC)
I'll be looking forward to it! *bounce*

Aside from Concrete Blonde and Carbon Leaf I haven't heard of any of those bands. Tell me about them.

I'm going to Tennessee to visit my mama this weekend. I don't know if I'm leaving Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, and I don't know when I'll be getting back Sunday.

So put me down as a "maybe" for all of the above.

Great Big Sea is Canadian Celtic pop-rock. With a little bit of maritime, and lots of fun energy. Seven Nations is similar, but I don't think they're Canadian, and I think they're strictly Celtic. Don't know Young Dubliners, but two great bands and one maybe-great band on a $15 ticket is good enough for me!

I'll be playing their CDs as you arrive tonight, so you can hear them. You can arrive earlier than 8 if you like, y'know; hell, get here at 6 and enjoy the music!
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:56 am (UTC)
What is "maritime" in this context?

I get off work at 5:30, but then I'm going to the park to skate.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:57 am (UTC)
Songs about sailing ships and whatnot; they're Newfies.

Come over whenever. :)
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 07:59 am (UTC)
They're giant, fuzzy, slobbery dogs? COOL!
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:22 am (UTC)
What? *blink, blink*
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:10 am (UTC)
Fuckin' Newfies.

So would you call Gordon Lightfoot's "Edmund Fitzgerald" a maritime song?
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:22 am (UTC)
Never heard of it.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:25 am (UTC)
You're shitting me! Never heard of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?!" That blows my mind.

My mind is blown! It was a huge hit, huge.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:32 am (UTC)
Never heard of it. Never heard of the singer, either. Seriously.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:37 am (UTC)
Um, add my shock to Glenn's.

You know I have no sound at work, silly - and you should be beyond shock at me not knowing stuff by now!
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 08:45 am (UTC)
Well, I'm beyond shock at you not knowing movies. Music, I'm still surprised at occasionally.

Like Killing Joke. I figured you'd know them better than I did.

Okay, remember: raised by wolves. Until age 11. No TV, very few movies, no music except oldies (and then only from Dad). If it happened before 1985, I am probably completely unaware of it.

I keep a photo of Edmund Fitzgerald at my desk. I have days like that.

I assume people over a certain age have heard of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, even if they don't know the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Less than yours.

As Alan (main singer) usually says, "We're Great Big Sea, from the tropical island of Newfoundland!" Yes, "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is definitely maritime. GBS is fun, upbeat music, much of it about women and/or drinking/partying. :-)

I saw the Uprooted Tour (GBS, 7 Nations, Young Dubs) here last week. Young Dubs opened, and they were great. Seven Nations was, as my friend Erin described it, kinda like frat rock with an accent (they're American, I believe). Didn't like them as much as Young Dubs (I'd go see a just-Young Dubs show). GBS was great, as usual (this was my fourth or fifth GBS show, I think). I was very pleased that all three bands got together to play "Jack Stewart" (aka "A Man You Don't Meet Every Day") as the final encore. It's a lovely song I first heard on a Minstrels of Mayhem album. Not sure how old it is, but I know the tune's been around a long time.

Prior to GBS's "A Boat Like Gideon Brown," there was a hilarious Alan/Sean repartee about boat envy, which started off when Sean asked "So, is boat envy a euphemism, then?" and Alan laughed. Sean kept up with the ribbing, Alan cracked up, and it took them about five tries to get the song started because Alan couldn't quit laughing. He nearly lost it halfway through when one of the lines took on an entirely different meaning after Sean's crack.

Gotta say, though, I like GBS's sell-out bar shows best. You can feel the whole room vibrate. Last one they did here, Carbon Leaf opened and was awesome. The CL guitarist ended up standing next to me for a lot of the GBS show.

So that song "Brandy" is maritime also?

How about Styx's "I'm Sailing Away?"

Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 10:40 am (UTC)
Um, no. :-) Though you might be able to make a case for Christopher Cross's "Sailing," which I'm embarrassed to know the words to (child of an easy-listening radio listener).

GBS is the *real* maritime stuff--hard drinking sailor types. And now I have their song "Jack Hinks" stuck in my head..."He's a sea-farin', sailmakin', gamboling, capering, grog-drinking hero, Jack Hinks." My internal sountrack (my brain seems to provide me with the Random Radio Station of my subconscious) is now stuck on Sea Songs. I'll probably get "Excursion Around the Bay" stuck next.
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 10:51 am (UTC)
Hey, now *I* have "Jack Hinks" stuck in my head! Which is okay, I like that song. Like "Wave Over Wave", too... :)
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002 11:33 am (UTC)
I'm like three seconds from having "Rant and Roar" stuck in mine. Mixed with two songs from my favorite Minstrels of Mayhem CD (the same one "Jack Stewart" is on...MoM is a really good duo from the Midwest who do the renfaire circuit. Was introduced to them by a college friend, got to see 'em live at the short-lived VA Ren Fest).

Concrete Blonde??? I am so envious!

Amanda and I are going to the GBS/YD/SN concert on Saturday night in Asheville, NC. Erin and [livejournal.com profile] ariadnesthread went last weekend I think and Erin said it was wonderful so I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be my first concert since U2 about a year and a half ago.
