Sunday.
Adam and Elayna wake up early to hunt for bunnies (there are tons of wild rabbits in Andrea's community). I sleep in as much as I can, as the congestion to accompany my sore throat hit full force last night. I'll be miserable for the entire day with congestion. Nothing works. If anyone knows anything that actually works, e-mail me, okay?
Today is the day of the brunch. 25 of Andrea's closest friends join us at a little restaurant in Scottsdale. Andrea has not only requisitioned the entire patio area, she has forced the owner to rent round tables because she feels rectangular tables aren't conducive to conversation. We have a special menu just for us and a ludicrously attentive wait staff. I've been to less-organized weddings. I'm serious about the wait staff, by the way... every glass of water had a perfect circle of lemon at a 30-degree angle, with the ice on top. Exact same angle. Pointing in the same direction. Every glass. And you know how when you get up, you place your napkin on the table? Every time I did that, I'd turn around to find that a waiter had snuck behind me and refolded it neatly.
Now, Elayna is shy, but so am I. Shut up, I am too. So this is pretty excruciating for me, plus I'm sick and have medicine head, but I think I manage to give an impression of not being a total idiot. Elayna ranges from shy to utterly charming, depending on whether she realizes she's the center of attention or not. She's given almost as many presents as Adam, and mercifully remembers to say "thank you" without being prompted.
The cake, by the way, cost $250.
The brunch lasts about 3 hours, and we go home, and Elayna finally gets to go swimming. I'm seriously thinking year-round lessons, as she seems to have forgotten much of what she learned last year. :( Charming moment of the day:
Elayna to random little girl in the clubhouse pool: "Hey! I want to ask you a question."
Random Little Girl: "Yeah?"
Elayna: "Will you be my friend and swim with me?"
Random Little Girl: "Yeah, okay."
Cute. :)
I'm completely wiped out at this point, so when we get back, we get Italian take-out instead of going out for dinner. Now, my parents have always been informal with the takeout, but Andrea cannot conceive of eating out of the containers like we do at my house (no, I didn't suggest it, Adam did - jokingly)... we get the food on real plates, of course. With cloth napkins. Which she's going to regret, as Elayna used hers a lot.
Elayna and I both go to bed around 9; Adam and Andrea stayed up. I was absolutely wrung out by the end of the day.
