Before Great Big Sea got started last night, I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] yendi and [livejournal.com profile] mousegrrl about music and how it affects me. Which is very strongly. I make up whole soundtracks for my characters, as I feel that the type of music a person likes tells a lot about them. And I mentioned how I have songs or bands that remind me very strongly of people. Like I'll never hear "Fire on the Side" by Tori Amos or "Alone" by Heart again without thinking of [livejournal.com profile] stronae. [livejournal.com profile] yendi doesn't really feel that way.

So, under the cuts, bands/songs that remind me of some of my friends. Feel free to post yours, especially if you have a song that reminds you of me. :)

[livejournal.com profile] yendi: "Drowning", by Boiled in Lead. Also pretty much anything by BiL, Oysterband, Captain Tractor, and Trish Murphy.
[livejournal.com profile] darkmattr: "Kiss Me Deadly" by Lita Ford, of course!
[livejournal.com profile] edie22: Anything and everything by Poison.
Nickie, who is LJless: Anything and everything by Bon Jovi.
[livejournal.com profile] deza: "Pour Some Sugar on Me", Def Leppard.
Layne: Skinny Puppy's first album.

Um. That is a start.

I got theme song courtesy of my then-boyfriend (freshman year in college). The first time we heard U2's "Mysterious Ways," he turned to me and said, "That's your theme song." [Our gaming group had been talking the night before about theme songs for our D&D characters]

When I asked him why, he said, "Because I'll never completely figure you out." He was right. The fact that he realized this meant he was more perceptive than I'd given him credit for. He's one of my "I wonder where they are now" people. He's probably a small-town doctor in New England. We were nearly totally wrong for each other, but I wish him all the success in the world.

My other theme song lately (past few years) is Tara McLean's "Let Her Feel the Rain," because I've been in a sort of numb state for way too long.

As far as other people go....I think I'll always associate "Last Sasketchawan Pirate" with yendi, because he's the one who first turned me on to Captain Tractor. "Sails of Silver" (Steeleye Span) for non-LJed 'long-lost twin sister' Treska, because she self-associates with it. Something by Semisonic for tanaise, mainly because we went to their concert together.

Funny that you say that...both Bret and I are infamous for making mixed tapes for just about everything. In fact, I'm working on one right now for the Morena story on Twilight, but our ways of doing things are 100% different.

Bret matches up songs with particular incidents and story point plots. He can tell you what's going on every minute of the song. If you ask him "what's this one for" he can tell you exactly, blow-by-blow what's going on in the story that goes with the tape.

I tend to go more for an overall "feel." Songs associate with feelings, things, or people in a very general way for me, and I mix on that basis. If Bret asks me what a song is doing on a tape, I'll say "it's for this event," or "it gives off this feeling" and sometimes I have a hard time putting it into words at all.

It's neat. Different ways of seeing and relating to music, I guess. Oh, and specific songs...in college, mine was U2's "Acrobat," and recently I've become quite attached to "Walk On." In college, my friends chose "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World" as my song. Others I've really associated with over the years? Footloose, Daughter (Pearl Jam). I always associated "Where the Streets Have No Name" with Bret. Bret considers Steve Taylor's "Hero" to be his song, and he's never picked a song for me as far as I know. For 'song? Hmmm...lemme think about that one on the way home and I'll get back to you...

Bret says for you, "You live you learn" By God, I mean Alanis Morissette. I think "Lightning Crashes" by Live. Don't ask why, that's just what fits to me.

Bret knew you wouldn't like it. Said "That's it. Whether she likes it or not. You'll have to hurt him yourself.

For the other one, lyrics are
