y'all should check out OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/) -- it's a freeware office solution that's supported by Sun. it was developed by them, in fact. the OASIS document format that many universities use is the native format of OpenOffice.org; it can also save in StarOffice format, and various M$ Word formats as well. plus it has a spreadsheet app, a Powerpoint-like app that can export Flash animations, a database program, la la la... it's hella cool. and it's FREE under the GNU Open Source License. yeh, FREE. bonus. =)

i dl'd it a few days ago because we just did a fresh reinstall of WinXP on our boxen and we don't want icky M$ Orifice clutter and security holes any longer -- and i have to say i LURVE OpenOffice.org. seriously, you should twig yer boss to this and give it a go.

In writing my thesis, last month, I spent a good HOUR of my time looking for the fucking script L symbol for Lagrangian. And I could have spent that hour, I dunno, having sex? Well, no, because I was at the office, but, you get the idea.

Fuck LaTeX. On the other hand, it does look pretty.

LaTeX is great, as long as you have a coherent .sty or .cls file setup for your intended outputs...

I think the only reason they keep me around at work anymore is because I've become more familiar with LaTeX than some of the professors.
