My dad had a really bad reaction to his standard chemotherapy during his second (or was it third?) battle with cancer. Like so bad that he blacked out and it took several doctors to bring him back. And my parents didn't tell me about it till weeks later.
Dad: What was I supposed to do? Tell you that your dad almost died the other day? Me: YES!
That's when I took to calling him before and after every chemotherapy appointment. I so don't want to go through this again starting next week, but it's not like I've got any choice. Blah.

I've been losing my dad in bits and pieces for five years--lost the last of him in April. You're right, you're never ready to lose your Daddy.
