Back from first training bit... and the Friday Five was decent today, so I'll do it.

1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you choose to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not?

My day job: secretary. Which is fine. I'm not dissatisfied in my job, really; I just wish I had more to *do*. Yeah, I know, most people will say the opposite. :) Is it what I choose? It's as good a job as any and better than most, and you can't beat the 5-minute commute! My other, unpaid, job you all know: writing.:)

2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream occupation be?

Writing comics. Which I'm doing. :) But yeah, I'd like to be able to do it full-time and make some money at it.

3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had any influence on your career choices?

My dad works as a sales rep for a surgical products company - artificial blood vessel, sutures, what have you. Mom's an office manager at a doctor's office. Nothing special, no real impact on my job choice.

4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and having a family?

I totally don't get this. Why is this considered a choice? I have a career and a family.

5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world? What is the hardest? Why?

Easiest job? Don't know. Hm. Hardest job? Parenting. Really. Because there's no other job that will subject you to this much emotional pressure. It's very worth it, though. :)

assuming "family" = "kids"...
the nature of, say, academic jobs, makes it really hard to have kids before you're 40, since you're unlikely to get tenure before then (especially if you're a woman), and you may be moving around a lot. I keep trying not to think about it. Let's face it--the more prestige/power a job has (professor, surgeon, politician, CEO, etc.), the less likely it is you can balance that and kids. Especially considering that women still do 90% of the childcare in America.

When it comes to career vs. family for men, it seems to me most men just decide to almost totally ignore family. At least, that's how my family worked. -_-

(Not to mention that some people are either opposed to constant daycare/babysitters and/or have kids who aren't suited for daycare.)

ANYWAY. Glad it's working for you. =) Hope you can hold it together.
