This quote that I posted yesterday: "Will you be my witness? Will you tell them that I tried?"

Interesting, the responses I got. :)

Actually, it's two lines of a song I'm writing from the viewpoint of one of my characters. Not telling who. I wasn't really expecting any replies to it, but it became an interesting thought experiment...

Sounds like Robbie Robertson or Leonard Cohen

Is that a Good Thing?

You are familiar with neither of the two? Your musical edumication is clearly lacking. Yes it's a good thing.

Robbie Roberson did stuff with Dylan and then went on the become "The Band" and then went solo again. "Up On Cripple Creek," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "The Weight" are songs you may have heard that he wrote. Later on he became a little more bluesey and mellow. "Broken Arrow" and "Somewhere Down The Crazy River" are on his self titled album, one I would put in my top ten list.

Leonard Cohen was a poet for a long time, then moved into folksy music in the 60's. If you saw "Pump up the Volume" the version of "everybody knows" that they played in the movie was the Leonard Cohen original, which was much better than the concrete blonde cover garbage that was on the soundtrack. Also on the movie was "If it be your will" which you might like for it's DS overtones, although it's intended as a rant against god. The album of his that I like best is "I'm your man" which has the following songs you might find on the internet somewhere if you have a search engine handy: "First We Take Manhatten," Tower of Song," and "Ain't No Cure For Love,"

Sorry, I rant. Did I mention reading HIgh Fidelity recently?

The only one I know of those is "Everybody Knows"... there are huge gaps in my musical education!

And you probably know the cheesy concrete blonde pop version. Kids today.

When we finally have our games night, maybe I'll remember that you need to hear music.

Is *not* cheesy.

Compared to the original version it has all the soul of a white bread and processed cheese sandwich with the crusts cut off. They had to retune it so it fit the triumphant car chase at the end of the movie. Maybe I'm just disappointed because I like other concrete blonde stuff, and they had to re-work a perfectly good mellow song song into a triumphant rebel anthem. If they could have sung it in the original mood I would have loved it, I'm sure, but the song just doesn't have triumphant rebel anthem in it.

Testify, Brotha! The cover of Bird on a wire from the movie of the same name really sucked too. The only good Cohen cover(s) that I've heard was Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat--and she's sung backup for Cohen for so long that I wouldn't expect anything less.

'Song, Robbie Robertson's second solo album was Storyville, and his third was Music from "The Native Americans"--relating to a series on PBS a few years back?

Yes, another terrible Cohen cover. There was a tribute album of Leonard Cohen covers, but it was only good for people who were die hard fans of the artists doing the covers.

Oh yeah, I heard the native americans album too, that one was real good.

You get the musical stamp of approval. You can work the CD collection at the next games party.

Ever hear of Gibb Droll? New album coming out soon!

I thought it was a bit of dialouge. And not knowing what you intended by posting it, I came up with the next line off the top of my head. But now, interesting. Hmmmmm.
