Elayna is having a Mad Science birthday party!

Part of the benefit of this: The kids get to do a bunch of projects... including two things to take home. So I don't have to do goodie bags. Well, I'll get bags, but I don't have to fill them with stuff. Yay!

So, my idea: a CD. Science-themed, of course. There aren't enough science songs out there, so I'll have to do some non-science stuff... but I'd like to have as many science-themed songs as possible.

Which is where you come in, dear reader.

Help!

The songs we have so far:

* "Weird Science", Oingo Boingo
* "She Blinded Me with Science", Thomas Dolby
* "The Sun", They Might Be Giants

We need more.

All songs must be appropriate for ten-year-olds, and preferably upbeat and attention-holding. TMBG's "For Science", for example, has science stuff - but is a bit too far out for the kids.

Hit me!

What about stuff like Tom Lehrer?

If nothing else, "The Element Song" would fit.. and while not specifically "Mad Scientisty," he also did stuff for the Electric Company like a song about making adverbs using "LY" and one called "That's Mathematics.."

Also stuff like the "Monster Mash," etc..

Oh, duh - we totally mentioned that in the car on the way to work, too! :)

Viscous Hairy Mary - collide '0' scope.

It always amuses me :)
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 05:29 am (UTC)
Tom Lehrer's Elements song.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 05:31 am (UTC)
Another good TMBG song is "Mammals." Also for vocabulary, "The Logical Song" by Supertramp.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 11:29 am (UTC)
Definitely Mammal.

And if you ever do an English party, hunt down "Adjectives" by ... aw crap. I'll get back to you on this.

Entropy by Moxy Fruvous

Did the Animaniacs do any science songs? (Bad geek, I don't know myself!)
I always loved their states and capitals songs! :)
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 05:46 am (UTC)
They did that great one where they read all of the ingredients off of a package of Twinkies...perhaps that would work. :)

And "Yakko's Universe" of course.

Einstein A-Go-Go by the works...
Neutron Dance by The Pointer Sisters
[and you could get the little darlings all running around to it by demonstrating a chain reaction using some ballons as neutrons etc...]

there's another couple of songs too [which I don't remember the names of] in the soundtrack to Young Einstein, if you could find that.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 03:03 pm (UTC)
Best thing off of Young Einstein would probably be "I hear Motion" by The Models.

I picked up the soundtrack a few years ago. I love it!

"Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades"?
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 12:43 pm (UTC)
I second this. Timbuk 3 ++.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 06:08 am (UTC)
I worked for them briefly. I never got to work a party. I was just an after school guy. Very cool company.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 06:16 am (UTC)
Science Fiction Double Feature (Rocky Horror)
Mother Necessity (Schoolhouse Rock)
Boom Boom, Ain't It Great to Be Crazy
TMBG - Particle Man? Dr. Evil?
E. Winter - Frankenstein (heh!)
Monster Mash
Something by Tesla ;)
BNL - Some Fantastic
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Two I've never heard, but sound promising:
Freezepop - Science Genius Girl
The Mad Scientist's Love Song

Sadly, Tull's "March, the Mad Scientist" probably wouldn't do in this particular case.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 07:21 am (UTC)
I was going to suggest Science Genius Girl. It'd work.

How about the Monty Python song about the size of the universe/

If you can get Dr. Jane Robinson's filk music, she's got a *lot* of science humor songs. Unfortunately, a fast googling doesn't turn up a good online filk source. If you're going to be at Arisia this weekend, there should be hucksters selling it.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 08:24 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately, there's that "bugger-all" line in there. (Similar to the reasons why I can't say "Carbon Cycle" by Hard 'n' Phirm.)
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 06:24 am (UTC)
Almost anything by The Chromatics.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 06:31 am (UTC)
there's a song by Crash Test Dummies off of God Shuffled His Feet, that includes the lyric, "how does a duck know which direction south is, or how to tell his wife from all the other ducks?" that might be apropos.

i can't remember whether the rest of the lyrics to that song are appropriate for a 10-year-old though.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 06:32 am (UTC)
TMBG - A Shooting Star is not a Star :)

It's right up there with "Why does the sun shine?" for science kiddly goodness. And it's sung in a ROUND. So cool.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 07:03 am (UTC)
Animaniacs - Additives/Ingredients song
^- An absolute must :)
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 07:24 am (UTC)
Distracting myself from work I found this (http://www.science-groove.org/MASSIVE/) interesting site. I must get back to work now...really....
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 07:25 am (UTC)
I'll have to check with [livejournal.com profile] songwind on this one, but there's a song about Einstein that gets played somewhat regularly on MPR. Definitely kid friendly and very fun to boot :)

Al Mackey's "Android Dancehall" or "King of the Sea Monkeys".

Try this link (http://www.acme.com/jef/science_songs/) and see what you can find.

Then at this one (http://www.songsforteaching.com/science.html) you can get mp3's (according to the hubby)

"Calculus" - by 2 get her. That fake boy band.

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 10:01 am (UTC)
One of the best spoof songs/bands EVER!

"I know my calculus! It says you plus me equals us..." (Or something close to it!) I still love that Chris Farley's brother was involved with that show/band. He did a great job.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 07:54 am (UTC)
the element song. I don't know where you'd go about finding it, but that would be a good one.
Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 09:01 am (UTC)
Christine Lavin, "What if we had no moon".
(Available on this album or on this one.

And "Fatal Attraction" by my pal Dan Bennett (on his tape Lavender Wine, which is sadly out of print (despite my occasional nagging for a CD edition!).)
(Annoyingly, Dan's site also seems to be down at present. =:o{ )

Fun! :)
There's a *lot* of science filk out there. If you're going to a con soon as someone said, find a filk dealer in the dealer room and ask them. I think there are some science-themed anthologies, even.

Dr. Jane, as has been mentioned.
Jordin Kare:
"Unified Field Theory" (ttto that "I just can't find no unicorn" kid's song), "The Designer", "The Engineer", I'm not sure which album
"Fire in the Sky", off Fire in the Sky
"Dawson's Christian" (written I think by Duane Elms), "Heart of the Apple Lisa", off Parody Violation.
"Every Mouse Just Wants to Rule the World" (about Pinky & the Brain), Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff, off Aliens Ate My Homework (http://wwww.cdbaby.com/cd/bohnhoff3)
"Won't Get Fooled" (it's about computers), ditto, off Retro Rocket Science (http://wwww.cdbaby.com/cd/bohnhoff1)
"Proteins" and "Boundless" by [livejournal.com profile] mrlogic aka Blake Hodgetts, off Blindsight (http://wwww.cdbaby.com/cd/hodgetts)

Echo's Children (http://www.echoschildren.org/Echos_Children_CD.html):
"The Word of God" (it really is about science), "Via Astra", "Outward Bound" off Under the Gripping Beast
"New Computer Blues", "Say Again Tower", "Song of the Stars", off As Good as Any
"My Planet's Child", "How It Is Applied", "Wings of Human Knowledge" (written for a Mars song contest), off A Dancing World
"High Frontier", off From the Hazel Tree

"World Inside the Crystal", "Vampire Megabyte", Steve Savitzky (http://thestarport.org/people/steve/Doc/Songs/)

...and about a bazillion others. :)

Actually you should just get all those CDs. You won't regret it. :)

You can find "Fire in the Sky" at the Virtual Filksing.

Warning for those who haven't heard it: it's a tear-jerker for anyone who's space-mad. Even thinking about it has my eyes starting to leak.

Mitosis Waltz? Maybe for advanced ten year olds. (Mitosis Waltz is by Moxy Fruvous, btw.)
