Dear 'song,

Do not mistake "having a decent week, medically" with "all better now".

Remember that even if one is "all better now", lugging around all of the comic boxes for the big weeding and integration project is not an inconsiderable amount of physical labor.

Love,

'song.

Yes, all of them. And all of the random stacks of comics, too. Because the lack of organization is driving me batshit crazy.

Everything is getting yanked out of wherever it is. Things that were never alphabetized will be alphabetized.

And there will be weeding. Oh, yes. There will be weeding.

If we have something in trade paperback, we do not need the original issues. (Unless they're autographed.)

If something sucked, we do not need it. (Full run of The Dreaming, anyone?)

So! We get organized, we maybe make some money selling doubles and stuff we don't need, and we regain a little extra space. Which will be taken by incoming comics, sure, but these days we're trying to wait for the trade on anything we're sure will have a trade. Because we know ourselves - we know we'll buy the trade anyway. And the trade is cheaper. And easier to re-read.

But this is a huge insane project, y0.

The ice storm prevented us from going to a comic shop to buy more boxes, but we've ordered some, so I should be able to get on with alphabetization and integration later this week. I figure two shortboxes a day is a decent goal. I can't do any weeding without Adam. Well, except for the "we have this in trade" stuff and the "all manga rox - oh, wait, that sucked" stuff.

But. Today's setup = a little much. The backs of my legs are all trembly, even.

I cannot endorse not keeping original issues and trades.

We got no *space*, dude...

It depends on the series. Bone is going. Strangers iin Paradise is staying; ditto Elfquest...
Saturday, January 29th, 2005 03:01 pm (UTC)
wait wait.... elfquest over bone?

it's bone for christs sake.

dammit.

ah well keep me posted on what ytou're getting rid of i might be willing to purchase some of it....
hell i'd probably even drive up to the ATL so you wouldn't have to ship to the SAV.
word.

of course I don't duplicate much, I duplicated robinson's starman and I duplicated the sentry.

Elfquest = sentimental value!

We're only "getting rid of" Bone because we're replacing it with the huge entire-series hardbound edition. We're not *losing* any actual Bone material.

That sounds odd.

i guess.... do they have fullsize decent cover galleries?

'If something sucked, we do not need it. (Full run of The Dreaming, anyone?)'

I liked The Dreaming, but then I like CaitlĂn Kiernan.

I'm "eh" on her.

getting rid of...comics...what?

ok, i understand the need for space, but if you post a list on LJ of the stuff you is getting rid of, i most def. will buy something....did i see you say you are getting rid of BONE? Dude...if you have it in trade it's not that bad, but i would kill for some of the single issues on their own....

Saturday, January 29th, 2005 07:15 pm (UTC)
We'll post a list. We're not throwing anything *out*, mind! We're selling.

We'll post a list on LJ before we hit the stores. :)

Let me know if you weed any trades... *coughs, whistles*
Saturday, January 29th, 2005 07:16 pm (UTC)
Will do. I actually think we do have a few doubles.
Saturday, January 29th, 2005 05:50 pm (UTC)
There's no such thing as too many comics. Space problems are easily solved by building an addition onto the house. Or three. ;)
Saturday, January 29th, 2005 07:16 pm (UTC)
Yeah, but we don't own, we just rent. :(
Sunday, January 30th, 2005 05:44 am (UTC)
So, rent the place next door as well. =:o}

(It's one of the options I briefly considered a year or two ago, when the flat adjacent to mine was changing occupants. But it would only have been a temporary holding bay for stuff I was sorting and weeding.)

Thanks to the incredible Shadesong effect, I was able to tell everyone why the Atlanta airports were shut down.

"Icestorm."
"How do you know?"
"I know a guy in Atlanta."
"OH yeah?"
"Yeah. Sheets of ice and everything."
"Well then. That would shut things down."
"Yes."

Off the topic, slightly, but still on the subject of comics.

Where would you suggest a neophyte to the medium start? I've read some of Ellis' work (a good chunk of Transmet and the first two Planetary books) and the first couple books of Hellboy (a friend handed most of that to me and said, here, and got me interested), but I don't know where to go from here.

So...suggestions? Or mebbe some of your other readers might have some for me as well?

Mmm. It would depend. What's your favorite sort of fiction in general? I usually start people off with Sandman, just to show what can be done with the medium.

Y'have to ask. I'm a science fiction junkie. ;) I can deal with fantasy and horror, but taste on them is rather more hit and miss. In SF, I prefer althist and more soft scifi as opposed to the harder stuff, but I'm really hardpressed to remember the last straight SF book I've hated.

I've poked at Sandman, and I may have book #1 around here somewhere, but it's been a while since I've read it.

And I had to read Scott McCloud's wonderful book on the medium for a digital storytelling class. (And yeah, I still have it.)

I won't need a full run of The Dreaming, but I might be interested in a few issues...

Oooh, weeding! *hugs* I definitely can't wait to see what's going! My best friend is a huge collector and will almost always buy something.

Glad you're getting more active, even if you did overdo it a bit today.
