Hello to new friend [livejournal.com profile] xian_pu!

So. I'm here at work. My fever's stable at 99.0 (yes, that is a fever for me, my usual temperature is very low), and I'm feeling mostly functional, so here I am...

An explanation of my answer to my own poll: The Charles de Lint fans here all know who the Grasso Street Angel is. Basically, she helps people. She takes in the addicts, the runaways, the people no one understands. And I was pointing out to [livejournal.com profile] yendi this morning that [livejournal.com profile] morenasangre and Bret think I'm totally Jilly Coppercorn, but I really want to be Angel - and he said that he thinks Jilly wants to be Angel, too. So Maybe I'm more Jilly than even I know...

If you have no idea what that last paragraph was about, hie thee to a bookstore of library. Get "Dreams Underfoot" by Charles de Lint. Read it. Then get the other Newford collections. I promise that you will love them.

Fashion tip of the day: when wearing skirts that are subject to static cling, put lotion on your legs. Prevents the skirt from clinging. Don't know why, but it does.

So, questions: What are you wearing, and what are you reading?

I'm dressed up today, as I'm trying to pep myself up. Different shoes! Funky chunky-heeled black monk-strap shoes with grommets on 'em. Long flowy black skirt (all of my skirts are ankle-length unless stated otherwise). Witchy Pirate Princess Shadesong shirt, the pink/tan/black swirly one (not the one I wore the last day of D*C). Top and sides of hair pulled back in a little clippy thing, and the rest has obliged me by curling all on its own. It's actually getting long enough to stay behind my shoulders when I toss it there.

I'm reading "The Big U" by Neal Stephenson here at lunch (what? I haven't been here to finish it!) and will follow that with "Adventures in the Dream Trade" by Neil Gaiman (essay collection). At home, I'm reading "Slavecraft" by "a grateful slave" (thanks, Heather!) and Dork Tower trade paperbacks.

What is this "Adventures in the Dream Trade" that you speak of, and why have I not heard of it before?

http://www.nesfa.org/press/Books/Gaiman.html

Dunno why you've never heard of it. But I have yet to see a bad book from NESFA. They also did nifty collections from John M. Ford, Will Shetterly/Emma Bull, and Lois McMaster Bujold, amongst others.

And Diana Wynne Jones. Must not forget the Diana Wynne Jones.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 06:31 am (UTC)
It's this year's NESFA publication - every year, NESFA does a limited-edition book of rarer work by their Guest of Honor.

Fashion tip of the day: when wearing skirts that are subject to static cling, put lotion on your legs. Prevents the skirt from clinging. Don't know why, but it does.

Not that I wear skirts all that often, but I'll have to try and remember that one.

So, questions: What are you wearing,

Sweatpants and t-shirt (both dark blue) and socks and bedroom slippers. Hair, which is getting really long (about 3" above my waist now), pulled back in a loose, low ponytail. Earlier, for work, I was wearing black Lee jeans and a tan and white striped t-shirt.

and what are you reading?

People's journals? When I should be working? Oh, you mean bookwise... Guardian of the Vision by Irene Radford. And The Koala Tome of All Knowledge by O'Reilly.

Black jeans, black suedeish shoes, burgundy long sleeved tshirt, black fleece with bronze zips.

Wearing: a green cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up, khaki pants, black socks, the "100,000 mile" loafers (they're just so comfortable, I could care less I've worn 1/8" off the heels and they're threadbare).

Reading: web sites, trying to tie together the origins of sauerkraut and kimchi.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 06:24 am (UTC)
Awww, man! I missed a witchy pirate princess ShadeSong shirt? I wish I'd seen you guys the last day. It was so wonderful getting to meet you and spend a little time with you. *hugs*! Hope you feel better soon, hon.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 06:40 am (UTC)
Wearing: The summer robe. Green, satin, and short. I'm off today, and it might be hours before I put on real cothes.
Reading: The Season of Lillian Dawes by Katherine Mosby. Must write a review of it when I'm finished.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 06:45 am (UTC)
I think you are Jilly as well, maybe a feminine version of Christy Riddel.

I am reading The Golden Compass by Philip Pulman. Great Restoration age stuff, magic, astronomy, secret cults, exploration, polar bears.

wearing, blue jeans, dark green tshirt, and fuzzy bear slippers.

I like long swishy skirts... :)

At the moment, I'm indulging in one of the few freedoms left to us, geeking semi-naked in my own little slice of the world; later I'll be in your basic geek uniform, a t-shirt and dockers and chunky comfy shoes.... the t-shirt could be anything from "geek by nature: Linux by choice" to a big purple dragon (yesterday I wore Canned Lunch (http://www.firebirdarts.com/tshirt/12tshirt03b.shtml) (scroll down a bit))...

And these days I'm pretty much reading LiveJournal. *sigh* I have a copy of Clancy's latest at the top of my queue, but can't seem to get my round Tuit...

I like long swishy skirts... :)

Me too! I'm like a little kid when I wear them... I bunch them up in my hands to climb stairs, I twirl to see them spin...

Thursday, September 5th, 2002 09:32 am (UTC)
Ahhh, no, 'song, that's not why I like long swishy skirts.

Unlike a pair of tight-fitting jeans, long swishy skirts just kind of hint at what's underneath, as opposed to laying it out there... and they also leave the underlying anatomy free to move, ahh, naturally....

Now where's a cold shower when I need one? :)
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:16 am (UTC)
Mmmm... :)
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:04 am (UTC)
Today I'm wearing a polo shirt and blue pants, sneakers, and all the usual odds and ends. Notice a pattern?

I'm still reading Apocalypse Troll by Weber and Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. I haven't had that much reading time lately. I'm also reading Sun's online Java tutorials.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:08 am (UTC)
Teal v-neck that I wear so often, my cream colored jeans that I didn't think would fit, and the usual black slides.

I'm reading Altar Ego, which [livejournal.com profile] tikimama gave me, and listening to Jimmy Eat World, which [livejournal.com profile] podling gave me.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:12 am (UTC)
Wearing: grey dress pants, tan India-style shirt with black, orange, and tan embroidery, that buttons to the waist (16 closely spaced buttons), then hangs open past my butt. I was in an odd fashion mood this morning, and just wanted *comfy*, but I wear this shirt with the green drawstring pants too often. I wanted a different colour combo. :) Brown loafers.

Reading: The Serpent's Shadow, Mercedes Lackey.

How long did it take for your One Spirit intro books to come in, from the time you ordered them?
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:20 am (UTC)
Umm... few weeks. And I'm still waiting for the other shipment to arrive, of the other book club I sent away for the same day as One Spirit...
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:17 am (UTC)
I'm wearing my TWoP shirt that is grey and has a Super Tubey on the front and the saying on the back "He's not just SUPER, he's FABulous", mauve bra, black jeans, purple flowery panties, and my black psuedo-loafers with a buckle and no heel

I am actually reading 2 books! I know! Go me! I'm reading the 5th book in the Clan of the Cavebear series that [livejournal.com profile] adellyna gave me and "Twink" that [livejournal.com profile] tikimama and [livejournal.com profile] melintur gave me.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 07:29 am (UTC)
Wearing: tan chinos, rust blouse, white sweater

Reading: at this precise moment, a new translation of The Man in the Iron Mask (love my job!), commuting, Swim the Moon by Paul Brandon (THers should remember him), home is STILL The Celtic Seers' Sourcebook, which I am far closer to finishing now.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 08:26 am (UTC)
Wearing: Black casual slacks, peachy-orangey-rusty coloured t-shirt with three embroidered tulips on it.
Reading: *sigh* Still trying to weed through Hunters Guide for the Live Action game. Also heavily into TWOP right now. Re-reading recaps for all my favourite shows.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 08:56 am (UTC)
Dude, of all the people in CdL's world to be, I think Angel and Jilly are last on my list. They're so unhappy, so unsatisfied, so wanting. Maybe that's my thing.

I'd like to be Meran ((I'm a sucker for a Galadriel lost in exile type), or Nia or someone who's healthy and happy--oh, wait, those don't exist in his universe. ;) Maybe Izzy--she seems content whenever she shows up these days, and she has a cool house.

Wearing: Levi's, blue sparkly Hogwarts shirt, trainers, SR hoodie. Booooooring.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 09:24 am (UTC)
Hey! I want to be Meran too! I sometimes feel I identify a bit more with Sophie, but that's more what my life used to be like. Now, I can more identify with Meran. Well, my dad's not the Oak King or anything, but she's got a good, happy life.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 09:39 am (UTC)
I think I shall, from this moment on, assume the Oak King is my real father. Since my IRL father is such a disappointment. ;)
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:15 am (UTC)
I don't see that in Angel at all! Elaborate?

I do love Meran, too, of course...
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 10:31 am (UTC)
Jilly? No, that's just wrong.

I'm sure you'll think I'm on crack, but I think you're Isabelle.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:03 am (UTC)
Why Isabelle?
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:39 am (UTC)
Because, and N.B. that this probably has as much to do with my own perspective and worldview and the limited information available to me as it does to do with you, but you seem capable of some pretty massive denial.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:43 am (UTC)
ummmmm... okay.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:26 am (UTC)
Hey, don't promise people they'll love "Dreams Underfoot." I was a huge Charles DeLint addict back when I read it, and I didn't enjoy it at all. As I've told [livejournal.com profile] yendi in the past, I got to a point with DeLint's novels where I felt like I was reading the same book over and over again, and it got much worse with his short stories, which made me feel like I was reading the same book twice an hour. I read everything of his up to "Memory & Dream," and then decided I needed a serious DeLint break before I could appreciate his books again.

What am I wearing? A sports bra. I'm working at home, so that's about all that's required. Sitting around braless all day ultimately gets uncomfortable.

What am I reading? "A Year At The Movies" by Kevin Murphy, a.k.a. Mystery Science Theatre 3000's Tom Servo. It's pretty lively and funny so far.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:37 am (UTC)
Okay. First: New Neal Stephenson novel? WAH! Howcome nobody told ME about it?

I'd love to get my hands on Gaimans essays. Dude was totally inspiring when I was reading Smoke and Mirrors.

Wearing: Khaki shorts and a 99X Big Shirt. But after I get my haircut? I'll probably change into... uh... shorts and, like, a t-shirt.

Reading: Everything's Eventual, Stephen King's new collection of short stories.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:46 am (UTC)
Not new - old. His first book, from like 20 years ago, back in print. :)
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 12:02 pm (UTC)
Ahhh...
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 12:45 pm (UTC)
Wearing a blue silk button down shirt, black slacks, and tevas.
Reading 'A Bitter Road' for Mage, MetroGnome by Alan Dean Foster, Travels in HyperReality by Umberto Eco, and a few others.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 05:30 pm (UTC)
Today I wore a new pair of dark denim jeans that are just a little too long (it's frustrating being full-figured and yet only 5'2"), a navy blue cotton top with multicolored horizontal stripes, and my canvas Converse All-Stars. One of the things I love about my job is that it's okay to show up for work dressed like this, and worse...I have in fact reported for work in my pajamas on a number of occasions. :)

I'm currently reading A Field Guide to Demons, The Mothman Prophecies, Struggle for Intimacy, and the latest issue of Oprah magazine.

The only Charles deLint book I've ever read was Trader, and I loved it.
Thursday, September 5th, 2002 11:22 pm (UTC)
wearing: zebra striped boxer shorts and a black tank top

reading: the witch trade by someone i can't remember and intrigues by sharon green and a werewolf fantasy book

and thanks for the welcome :)
