Mind you, I'd never go there, but I'm a big, fat, hairy coward -- I have no intention of ever visiting NYC at all -- cities scare me as much as Really High Buildings.
I also agree strongly with the author of that article. New York is a city of vitality and looking to the future. I would hate to see such a large and central part of the downtown stagnate as only a memorial. On the other hand, I like the idea of the actual "footprints" of the towers remaining as hallowed ground. There's a section at cnn.com where people have sent in their ideas for the site. My favorite is a combination of several. I think there should be three towers built, slightly taller than 110 stories, and in such a way that the negative space inbetween forms the outline of the original 2 towers. The ground beneath that exact area would be 2 relective pools, so no one would walk on it. Then maybe the memorial could be on a bridge connecting the tops of the 3 towers, completing the negative space image of the 2 towers.. There're several hundred other ideas at the cnn site:
