Yesterday, one of our grad students called just to see if I was okay; she'd been worried about me. Said that if I was out one more day, she was calling my house. :) No other purpose for the call; just wanted to see how I was doing.
And today I got a call from one of the professors' wives - she wanted to know if I was selling wrapping paper for Elayna's school. She wanted to make sure she and her husband bought from me, because I'm "so good to him; oh, he thinks you just hung the moon, you're so good." And she said that if he didn't get around to placing an order, I should just go ahead and mark her down for a few things. Didn't matter what. She just thought that they owed it to me.
So for all the screwups, there are some cool people. And I'm actually kinda happy about the low-grade panic my absence inspired, not just because it means people like me, but because I'm starting to feel a little less disposable... at my last job, I was utterly indispensable, but here, I've felt a little more...interchangeable, not really necessary.
So. Things are good.
I'm still congested as hell, though.
