At Macy's: Two black skirts, one gauzy and sequined, one just-plain-black and *short*. Cost: $41.00. Cost to me: $0.

At Gap Kids: Three sweaters, a skirt, a scarf, a hat, a pair of mittens. (Those last three match.) Cost: $84.00. Cost to me: $11.00.

At Barnes & Noble: Fruits Basket volumes 2, 3, and 4; Sorcery and Cecilia; the American Girl quiz-and-games book, vol. 3. Cost: $48.17. Cost to me: $.17.

At Target: Space heater. Cost: $21.00. Cost to me: $21.00. (Not worth cracking a gift card for.)

Total amount spent: $32.17. Good shopping day.

Now I'm going to see if my family will let me write. Seeing as that's why I bought the heater (cold basement office) - why we left the house today in the first place, dammit.

We are on the BDSM and geeks:why? panel together. I have a feeling it might draw quite a crowd. My friends have already threatened to show up because they think I will be embarassed! This is my first time paneling at Arisia. I was on a panel with Hal Clement at Salem State College a few years ago. Anyway, I'm really excited about being on panels at Arisia and looking forward to meeting you and the other panelists. Do you know the others on our panel?

Oh, excellent! That's the panel I proposed. They didn't do too good a job of explaining it - basically, what I want to discuss is the subliminal triggers in geek culture that lead us to an interest in kink, the messages in geek-specific media (my example being Wonder Woman losing her powers when her bracelets are bound together by a man - lots of bondage in early WW!).

I know two of the other panelists - Tom = [livejournal.com profile] docorion, my partner and Dom; Pete = [livejournal.com profile] happypete, just a friend. :) I don't know the other guy.

So what are your thoughts on the topic? Anything you want to discuss before jumping in?

(Hal Clement was such a sweet guy...)

Well now that you have explained the topic in more detail I'll have to ponder it some more. Initially I was thinking of it in cultural terms and drawing a link between kink and geek culture both being outside the mainstream and therefore having a crossover. There seems to be some debate about this amongst my friends though. I think it's a natural and common crossover because most of my kinky friends are geeks and most of my geeky friends are at least open to kink if not active in it. But one friend pointed out that I am speaking from a biased persepctive. But certainly Wonder Woman is a great example! She was my first female crush. What a surprise! I also felt drawn to the women in such films as the Conan series. Not the warriors but the helpless slave girl types. What other media examples have you thought of?

Hey I also have a first time panelist question...do we pick up our badges at the same place as everyone else?
