I had Eloise as a child but lost the book. Then for my 27th birthday my roommate and best friend gave it to me, as she had decided that Eloise was secretly (or, not so) my Inner Child. She kinda is.
She's 7... she's currently reading the Fudge books by Judy Blume, and she's also enjoying Narnia. And read Sideways Stories from Wayside School recently. Also loves LeGuin's Catwings books, and Bunnicula... she's got eclectic taste.
Astrid Lindgren (author of the Pippi books, unfortunately dead now) wrote a lot of good stuff. I loved _Ronia, the Robber's Daughter_ when I was a kid.
Also check out Dianna Wynne Jones (I like most of her stuff as an adult; its age range varies from just-into-chapter-books to adolescent.) and _The Phantom Tollbooth_.

That would be the New York contribution to your daughter's fictional exposure :)
