Last night I was going through my file cabinet, looking for a particular short story that I thought was named "Julia" (not Shayara Julia, this predates her) but was really named "David" (and I remembered why I named it "David" instead, and I remember thinking how clever that was at the time - you'd understand if you read it, which you won't because it sucks), and I found the first page I'd ever written about Capri.
It was typed, hell, not even single-spaced, like 3/4-spaced, the words practically on top of each other, on very thin paper. Typewriter, not computer. The page was undated, but it was faded, yellowed. Old. And I remembered it as I read it. :)
Originally, Capri had no ties to the Talthar Kithrayna; she was just another happy-go-lucky teenager. I hadn't killed her parents off, either. And rather than her guardian, Halloran (who wasn't a Kithrayn in this version) was just her best friend. So this page, and a scattered few handwritten ones, are what's left of her original story, where she falls in love not with Halloran, but with a mysterious guy named Joshua with no apparent past or identity.
She felt older then. Which makes sense, as now we get to know her as early as 11, and she carries her childlike exuberance with her through the story... she was joyful then, but as we didn't *know* little Capri, it just seems more... grounded. Mature.
I remember that girl.
