The subject is a Barry Ween quote. If you have not read Barry Ween, I want you to go buy all four trade paperbacks right now. And read them. And then come back. I'll wait. Seriously, y'all need to educate yourselves on this.

Okay. So. Why am I muttering invective? Well, remember my Invader Zim bookbag? I posted that it broke on Tuesday? Well, Hot Topic doesn't *have* any more. No more Zim. Dammit dammit dammit. I am bookbagless, bereft and forlorn. Hell.

*sigh*

So. They'll refund our money, of course. And I'll apply it to cute funky shoelaces and Strawberry Shortcake socks and whatnot. But I will still not have a bookbag. And I need one very muchly.

What exactly is a bookbag? I have a backpack here that I've had for about five years now, in which I've carried all sorts of stuff. I'd recommend the brand (Sporthouse) to anyone, except that it's an Irish brand, and you probably can't get it there...

I subject this bag to horrible treatment - books in excess of fifty pounds weight plus a laptop - on a regular basis, and it's still as solid as the day I bought it.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:19 am (UTC)
I should post a picture of it. It's not a backpack, really, as it's only got one strap - it's a very oversized shoulder bag, big enough to carry a three-ring binder and some spiral notebooks.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:20 am (UTC)
Ah, OK. I think I know the kind; I'd call it a strap-satchel. Is it some synthetic material, or could you just go at it with a needle and strong thread?
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:30 am (UTC)
It's the plastic bit that keeps the strap on the bag that broke. I'll have to see if I can find something to keep it on...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:41 am (UTC)
Aha. The application of some very strong glue? There're a few brands of epoxy glue here that will be stronger than the original plastic when they set.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:02 am (UTC)
I'm thinking maybe a heavy keyring. I'll evaluate it when I get home.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 12:31 pm (UTC)
Eeeeepoxy! I'm all about epoxy. It'll react chemically with the plastic and kinda chem-weld everything back together. Miraculous stuff, really...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:47 am (UTC)
The kind of bag she's talking about is made for small children, so they're not very sturdy; almost any kind of weight will tear them apart. =/ It's very vexing.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:40 am (UTC)
Ah, Hot Topic. Let's just say their stuff is not always of the highest quality (as can be said for at least one of their psycho-managers). Bitter? Me? Nah.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:01 am (UTC)
*hugs*

I'm thinking you may want to make something. Jen's bag broke some time ago, and she just went and got a Simplicity pattern... now if we can ever get to the fabric store, and then get her time to sew it together....

Some of the best stuff I've got is handmade.... a big waterproof duffel bag, with the straps running all the way underneath so they actually hold the bag up rather than pulling on the fabric...

but that's just my two bits...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:43 am (UTC)
Make something?

That's what I love about you - your sense of humor. :)

Seriously, I'm totally incompetent in that regard...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:07 am (UTC)
Making things isn't THAT hard. :) But you can usually bribe someone else to make stuff for you - is there anyone around there who makes Ren Faire or SCA garb, for instance? I can't sew worth a toss, but I can carpent.. carpenteer... work wood.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 12:33 pm (UTC)
Totally! If you took the bookbag you have apart, you could make another one out of sturdier materials...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 06:42 am (UTC)
Poor 'song. =/ Have you checked eBay yet? They usually have some cute stuff.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:03 am (UTC)
eBay's where I got the Sailor Moon backpack I loved so much, the one that gave out recently after years of hard use... I miss it. :( I'll be looking...
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:09 am (UTC)
You're too old to be shopping at Hot Topic anyway.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:15 am (UTC)
Bitch, I am not.

And I will continue to shop there as long as they're the only retailer that selling Invader Zim shoelaces and Muppet panties.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:50 am (UTC)
I went to Hot Topic for the first time over the weekend with [livejournal.com profile] endersjewel. I felt definitely too old to be in that store.

Yes, dear. I'm aware of the website. I've been there only to acquire an Autobot visor. I just realize that the stuff in that store is just not quite my generation....or something. It's like, they're the kids who started watching Nickelodeon after it became a haven for bad jokes about bodily functions. But I remember when it came on the air for the first time. The magic and wonder that channel beheld! Danger Mouse! The Tomorrow People! But within a few years it just went downhill. Ah well. I'm just babbling now.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 10:19 am (UTC)
But they have Strawberry Shortcake socks! And Muppet panties! This *is* stuff for our generation!
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 11:09 am (UTC)
Thus my delight in finding an Autobot visor. I do of course run into the problem with cool clothing I find everywhere. There's nothing in my size. Not the store's fault, really.

Musical interest is part of it, though I guess that's less a generational thing and just a preference. I couldn't find anyting in their musical selection that I wanted to take home.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:58 am (UTC)
Muppet panties... is Kermit in your pants?
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 08:02 am (UTC)
In 10-14 business days he may well be.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 08:09 am (UTC)
Now Ms. Piggie will *never* get any hot green action... he'll be too busy :)
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 08:39 am (UTC)
Oh, she'll be busy; they have Ms. Piggy panties too. :)

Assuming I can find a decent pic online (or somebody can send me one) of Invader Zim (since I'm not familiar with the series), or Sailor Moon, or whatever, I'll make you a bag myself, 'Song. And I'll make damn sure the straps aren't going to fall off.

Just had a bag of my own lose a strap after I'd owned it about a month. And I *didn't* buy that one from Hot Topic.

But I'll save the HT rant for another time, save that I agree with whoever said earlier that the quality of their products generally isn't the best, particularly for the price you'll pay for them.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:26 am (UTC)
Oooh! You could do that? *beam*

I have to design my dream bag now....
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:22 am (UTC)
If you want it to last nearly forever, find some (or someone else to find some) canvas and make a liner, and heavy stitch it onto the lanyard attachments for the straps, and use the big rings like you suggested before.

At that point you should be able to carry as many bricks as would fit in the bag...

You are the second (and yes, only the second) person I've come across recently who's a fan of Invader Zim. I'd never even heard of Invader Zim before running into this other person on a place called Pyroto Mountain (http://www.pyrotomountain.com)

So, who's Invader Zim?
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 10:26 am (UTC)
Invader Zim is a cartoon on Nickelodeon (or it *was* - got cancelled recently) created by the twisted mind of Jhonen Vasquez, the warped individual who gave us the comic books "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" and "Squee", among others. But toned down for kids. Weird kids. And weird grownups.

Zim himself is an alien from a planet called Irk; the Irkens are looking to conquer the galaxy, one planet at a time, with their elite group of Invaders. Zim is... a joke, really, so they assign him this backwater planet no one's ever heard of, called Earth. Zim arrives on Earth, finds that he's very small compared to us, and proceeds to attend elementary school while attempting to wreak havoc on our planet and failing miserably. He also has an insane robot sidekick named Gir who dresses up like a dog, and his main opposition comes from Dib, a budding grade-school parapsychologist.

You really, really have to watch the show. It's near-impossible to describe.

Barry Ween rocks my world. I find it difficult to believe that someone who was on The Real World writes and draws it...

Er, back on topic... Hot Topic. I have a friend who is an assistant manager at the Stonecrest store. You might look there (assuming you're not already) and see what they have. All their Invader Zim stuff was marked down when I was there earlier in the week... Too bad I was broke.
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 07:47 pm (UTC)
Stonecrest? Wuzzat?
