First off, hi to new friends [livejournal.com profile] corruptviridian and [livejournal.com profile] dragonheart97!

Just got home from our parent/teacher conference, and the news is good. The news is very good. Elayna is doing an absolutely excellent job, academically and socially; the whining we'd discussed at the open house last week has been reduced drastically. She's been recommended to test for the gifted program again this year. She's working on multiplication - simple times tables now, but her teacher estimates that next month she'll be doing triple-digit-times-single-digit multiplication, and she thinks Elayna's ready for some higher math, beyond third grade (she's in second grade in a Montessori first-through-third-grade class). There's nothing she needs to work on in particular. Nothing. She's exceptional.

The one statement that made me grin the most... we were talking about Elayna's obsession with wombats, and I jokingly said, "Y'know, it's hard to find children's books about wombats!" And her teacher said, "Elayna's reading is so advanced... it wouldn't have to be a children's book."

My kid rocks.

Is she writing her own books yet?

Mama and I used to sit down together. I would tell a story, and Mama would write it down and illustrate it with little line drawings, and I would color it.

Nephew wrote with me "The Dragon In With The Socks" some months ago. "There was a dragon in with the socks. The socks caught on fire! The guys ran around and around in circles. They disappeared like ghosts! The dragon flew away." Exceptionally silly, and so much fun!

Sounds fun! :) She wrote her own books in kindergarten... I should see if I can get her interested again!

Yes, your kid does in fact rock. And this is public school?? Whatever school it is, it rocks too.... they're not afraid to feed the kid knowledge with a firehose if she can drink it up...

It's a public Montessori school... Montessori method is very much letting the kids guide their own education. They make sure the kids are functioning at grade level, but if she wants to do an extended report on penguins - which she did last year - they turn her loose in the library, let her make posters and do presentations for the rest of the class... essentially, she has access to materials up to an advanced fifth-grade level, and in some areas, she's functioning at that level. Because she's curious. And Montessori method is built on that curiosity - if you make higher math materials available, for example, the kids will be curious. The kids will learn.

Yeah. I love this school, and I love this system.

I'm so glad you've met The Sane!! ([livejournal.com profile] corruptviridian) She's kind of my insane other half. I miss her horribly horribly horribly painfully bad as she is 1000+ miles away, which makes me cry. A lot. Poot. Now I have must go make sniffly sad noises.
