This is extreme background. :)

The false Council, in various incarnations, has actually been in control of the city for over a century. The decay and rot have fully set it at this point. The only thing that was keeping them from being totally open and seemingly above-board in their control was the lack of a Lishaya; the true Lishaya had been missing for around 150 years. Nonetheless - Lishaya-less - it was generally known that they ran the city.

About 25 years pre-Purges, they decided to make their own Lishaya. During the following 5 years, they evaluated bloodlines, strength, and power in an attempt to determine the most likely bloodline for the Lishaya to spring from. Another team, at the same time, was sent to seek out the true Lishaya. Eventually, the searches were narrowed down to the three Tamrani women most likely to produce a child of sufficient power to be passed off as the Lishaya. Katrina Stone was taken into custody and...coerced...to produce a child of the appropriate bloodlines. And the true Lishaya (at that time, a 10-year-old girl) was murdered by the other team.

Nine months later, Alanna was born.

She was immediately taken into the custody of the false Council. They brought her to Shayara, proclaimed her to be the true Lishaya, and raised her in almost-complete seclusion, training her to be their figurehead, their pawn. And on her 16th birthday, she took power, "assumed the throne", so to speak. Four years passed, during which the Great Houses of the Dasaroi gradually, reluctantly swore fealty to her.

All but two. Bartomn... and her own house, Tamra. And the patience of the Council had finally run out.

Thanks! :) I promise, though, there *are* some happy bits. There's Napalm and Johnathan for comic relief, there's True Love...

I did think there were going to be happy bits too. Glad to hear that I thought correctly. *grin*

From I first saw the backstory on the website, I've been fascinated...it just drew me in.
