Full moon
Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions! In lieu of anything complex, as we didn't want to feel rushed, [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat and I honored the full moon with a long walk. And ice cream. Because everything worth doing is worth doing with ice cream.

Vermicious Knids
The vermicious knids are from "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator", guys. Bone up on your Roald Dahl! Bonus cool points to [livejournal.com profile] tanaise, [livejournal.com profile] melvh, and [livejournal.com profile] phantom_wolfboy. Heh. I should make that a contest - name a character or race or event from a book that you should all know, and see who gets it.

On how much [livejournal.com profile] karlita rocks
Elayna was absolutely delighted to get mail yesterday, both pieces from [livejournal.com profile] karlita - a postcard from London, and a little Halloween packet with stickers, mini erasers (her particular favorite), and a jack-o-lantern notepad! *hugs* to [livejournal.com profile] karlita - thank you so much, that was incredibly nifty of you, and you totally made Elayna's day. :)

On Elayna, and homework
The current homework issue: She rushes through her math. This means that she ends up transposing numbers, or subtracting when she should be adding or vice versa. Any moms have tips on getting her to slow down and think? We're checking her work and making her do the problems over...and it's all stuff like that, stuff where we can easily see that she's just rushing it. No problems with the technical knowledge.

And that is all for now.

Vermicious Knids rock. :)

When I was younger I had the same problem (ok, so i will also occasionally transpose things, check them, and they LOOK fine to me, but its really wrong. but thats my brain playing nasty tricks and another issue). My mom would give me a timer and I'd have a set time I HAD to take to do my math homework. (this was back when I had a sheet of math problems to do, or something like that, where a uniform time could be established). Taking longer was fine, but I couldnt take any less time. This helped me slow down, as finishing quickly really had no advantage. (this only worked cuz I WANTED to stop making stupid mistakes, otherwise you can just sit there and stare off into space). g'luck!

That's a great idea! We've been thinking of getting her a timer anyway, because she tends to dawdle on things... hadn't thought of setting a *minimum* time, though. Thanks!

Speaking of stickers, you have GOT to get Elayna a page of the US Post Offal's Bat Stickers. (http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/display_products/productDetail.jsp?OID=2458625&BV_UseBVCookie=yes) They are incredible - almost as good as the carnivorous plants stickers from last year!

Hmmmmmm - keep an eye on your mailbox...

I do want to give you those books in person, and not mail them...

*perk* Even more mail? *hugs*

Yes, I'd definitely like to get together in person... is [livejournal.com profile] photognome up to hanging out yet? How does he feel? We've plans for all day Saturday and Sunday midafternoon, but we're free for a brunch/lunch thing if you are. Your schedule's probably way crazier than mine. :)

I had the same problem as a kid with math. And I never did manage to slow down on the actual doing of it, but my father (an engineer) taught me to go back over it, and to do the problems backwards starting with the answer. ::shrug:: I imagine you've already shown Elayna that, but just in case... :)
