Did lunch with [livejournal.com profile] yendi and Mike, for Mike's birthday! Park Bench. Had red meat; first time in probably a month. Managed to eat about 2/3 of the burger. We discussed our summer gaming plans and are really not that much closer to figuring out what we want to play, partly because I'm having a spacy day.

Other than that, nothing. I have a headache. *whimper* And I wanna go home.

We keep trying to get a game going, but it never pans out. Trying to find good people to game with is so difficult...

I know the feeling - but we have the two of us and Mike and maybe John Adcox and now maybe [livejournal.com profile] arkhamrefugee....

Ugh, tell me about it. My first two years of college were rife with gaming--two long-term D&D-based (but spinning off into our own ether) games with my roommate and our BoyHarem, occasional pickup ShadowRun games, several ShadowRun LARPs....much, much fun. Then two years of very sporadic gaming (once every couple of months), then weekly games during my last year and a half of college. Two years later, after I got an apartment with my college friend/gamemaster, we'd play every week or two, even though it involved driving an hour and a half each way to a friend's place in Richmond. Then the bastard decided to move to the Pacific Northwet, and we pretty much quit gaming. I'm still in withdrawal. The last college games and one of the post-college were StarWars, which was much fun. The other was a system and world invented wholecloth by EvilRoommateEd. It was very cool and really well put together. My character became very glad she had Glamour as one of her magic abilities, because she ended up with several very unattractive scars.

Oh, and I've been a participant in three different Vampire LARPs, all of which have died sad and untimely deaths. Le sigh. I so miss gaming.

Does anyone play Gamma World anymore?
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:08 pm (UTC)
Would this be old school Gamma World, the abortive attempt at a new Gamma World that TSR did right before they got consumed by the Hasbro-WotC axis or the Alternity Sci-Fi game that masqueraded as Gamma World for a while?

Cause if so the answer is, in order, not in a long time, no and HELL no.
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:10 pm (UTC)
Um, I only knew about the one Gamma World, which I'm guessing is the first one you named.

Clearly I'm way out of my depth here.

Just ignore me.

*grins* Don't sweat it. A year and a half spent working a gaming shop has permanently scarred my psyche. ;-) I am no longer normal, if I was to start with.
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:13 pm (UTC)
Oooh, you too? I working in a gaming/comic shop way back in the day...
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:15 pm (UTC)
Oh, yeah man. Worked in one of the biggest chains in Mississippi (which is to say we had 4 stores statewide). Our store sold ALL sorts of games and comic stuff. ;-) The manager and I were the collective bomb yo.
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 02:22 pm (UTC)
I worked in the only gaming store in Southern Utah... I was the only gamer chick in a 3-state radius. And I used to bring my pet rats to work. I was *so* the bomb. :)

Which one? I had the displeasure of working for Roland Kastle at Komix Kastle in Athens. *shudder*
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:18 pm (UTC)
This was Gun Dog Comix in Jackson, MS. They went under a few years ago I think. When my partner and I left them, we took ALL the clientel with us. :)

If we hadn't been poor as hell, we would have opened our own store.

My dad actually offered to buy me a comic store if I'd just stay in Florida. See how much I love you, [livejournal.com profile] yendi?

Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 01:21 pm (UTC)
THE Roland Castle? The one who had the most obnoxious messages on all of usenet when he was promoting MOC? Was he as bad in person as on the Net?

Let's put it this way--until then, I was completely unaware of the fact that the job description for cashier included "satisfy the pervert's sexual urges".

Ick. I was always disgusted by him online, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Glad I never went to his con now.
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 03:53 pm (UTC)
Oh, the con is great. As long as you aren't female.
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 03:58 pm (UTC)
I'd heard it described as grope-con. And the web pages that went up after the one con I heard about ('95?) basically were nothing but orgy pix. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I didn't see any sign of any con-type stuff. At all.

Last one I went to was 93. Tons of magic card games, no organized tournaments. Spent a very enjoyable afternoon talking to Lawrence Watt-Evans and "some other guy" (Joel Rosenberg, who made me into a bit character).

I remember playing original Gamma World once. Our GM had set up a sort-of-Chrysalids situation. The norms on one side were all "Watch thou for the mutant!" And on the other side were us mutants. :)

I played a lizard-like being with two brains. I was the adopted son of the leader of the mutant community. We captured one of the norms, then he, I and one or two other mutants were off to quest for new power cells for my daddy's "thunderstick", that didn't work any more.

After all the jokes about how the fact that my daddy's thunderstick didn't work any more explained why I was adopted were over, we set off on the quest. Gamma World being a total Monty Haul game, we almost immediately found a whole passel of useful equipment. Then the GM rolled on the wandering monster chart, we passed within 100 metres of a radioactive moth, failed our saving throws against radiation, and all died.

The look on the GMs face alone was almost worth it. We went back to playing champions and didn't even talk about other systems for weeks

Park Bench--I know Larry! He lives next door to the bitch that is no longer my mother-in-law!
Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 02:19 pm (UTC)
Yeah? Larry's waitresses are awful. :(

Thursday, May 23rd, 2002 03:44 pm (UTC)
That's cause he generally goes in at night. The day staff gets away with murder. I'll pass it on, though.
