Yesterday morning was a last-minute packing frenzy (and we still forgot stuff!), punctuated by angst over not knowing how we were going to get to the airport - John's car was in the shop. :( I don't like parking my car at MARTA stations long-term, as it has Florida plates - I'm paranoid that they'll tow it, And we usually take cabs, but that gets so expensive. So. We ended up taking a cab to the MARTA station. Worked out fine.
When we got to the gate, we were informed that our flight experience that day was being filmed for promotional use worldwide, and that by getting on the plane, we were giving consent for them to use our images. Ummokay. That ain't legal. But I didn't feel like bitching about it.
Probably because of the filming, the boarding process was the most orderly that I've ever seen it - two neat lines. As I hauled Miss Kid up to the ticket takers,
yendi was chosen for a baggage search. As he turned to tell us, both the security guy and the ticket-taker got that "oh shit" look on their faces - they were clearly profiling single men. The ticket-taker asked if I would be able to get Elayna on the plane and settled by myself, face a mask of sympathy; flustered by crowds, I said, "sure" - with the benefit of hindsight, I *should* have acted even more frazzled and let my eyes fill with tears; they would probably have let
yendi go! But I get all flustery, so I didn't think of that. :(
Got onto the plane to realize that there are more benefits of being filmed - this was the cleanest, tidiest plane I had ever seen. It looked brand new. And the barf bags and Skymall magazines and stuff were so neatly arranged, and there were headphones - headphones! - on the seats. When's the last time you got free headphones on a plane?
We settled in, and eventually
yendi caught up... unfortunately, he'd wrenched his shoulder trying to maneuver a suitcase through first class, so he had to have an ice pack and a pillow under his arm for the duration of the flight. :(
The flight itself was uneventful - Elayna read Archie comics, I read "Dead Until Dark" by Charlaine Harris, and
yendi read "Ethan of Athos" by Lois McMaster Bujold. Landed in Florida as I finished my book. :)
Dad was there to meet us at the gate - Elayna was so excited to see him that she actually started skipping! Hugs were exchanged, and we went off to visit Mom at work - with that accomplished, we got "home".
At which point I got seriously pissed off.
Last week, I mailed Elayna's summer clothes down here. I tearfully, neatly folded every little outfit, every shirt, every dress, packing everything that goes together, together.
My sister unpacked the box.
I came in to find *every* *single* *outfit* separated. Most of the shorts in drawers. All of the shirts on the bed. Things that you wouldn't believe were separated were - like the little kerchief that matches one of her dresses.
All the trouble I went to...
So. I had to take everything out of the drawers, match it up with everything that was strewn across the bed, and put the outfits back together... because otherwise, how are they supposed to know that there's a tank top that goes with those cute little plaid shorts? *heavy sigh*
That done, I watched Dad and
yendi set up the new DVD player.
Understand this: I'm mad at Dad for getting a DVD player. Not *seriously* angry, just... I've been planning since last Chanukah to get my parents a DVD player for Chanukah/their anniversary. So now I can't. And it would've been a really good gift.
They bought one DVD. Harry Potter. Elayna's going to have to teach them to use that player. :)
Begged prettily to use the computer. Discovered that, not only to my parents still have AOL, they do not yet have DSL. I know that this must be at least a 56k modem, it's a new computer, but I swear it feels like 14.4 sometimes. This is sooo annoying. :( *Finally* got through e-mail, read y'all's posts (will reply when I get home - this computer is too damn slow, takes 5 minutes to load a page!). Called
edie22 and
darkmattr and had
yendi try to call
stronae.
edie22 came over! We giggled madly at the '60s Batman TV show, had dinner, then giggled madly some more at Smackdown!, wherein she saw that I get the same things out of Smackdown! that she gets out of Smallville. :) That, and Edge is *hot*.
Had a minor almost-crisis - Grandma had not been returning phone calls all evening, so Mom was getting panicky. They went over to check on her - she was fine, just forgot to tell Mom she went to play canasta. So *whew*.
And then bed. Now reading "The Store" by Bentley Little, which I selected to read on this trip specifically because
edie22 is a Wal-Mart junkie. :) I'm developing a kernel of thought which will eventually become a post on why Bentley Little writes what he does. Watch for it. :)
And now, I am off to get my hair cut and brought back to its natural color. More later! :)
P.S. They have no coffee here. Heeelp meeee...
