Okay. I was thinking about this in the airport yesterday.

People talk to me. Personally, I think I just have one of those faces, or one of those auras, or one of those whatevers, that leads people to talk to me. [livejournal.com profile] edie22, [livejournal.com profile] stronae, and [livejournal.com profile] yendi, among others, always assume the person is hitting on me, and I always object.

I guess part of the reason for my objections - besides the fact that I don't find myself to be pretty - is that I would much rather credit this to something thinking I seem cool or like a good listener than someone thinking "whoa, nice rack." I want to believe that my personality makes more of an impression than my appearance. I really, really want to believe that.

I dunno. If you've met me, what was *your* first impression?

Nest time I'm in ATL (rare usualy to visit Juli who is up here in asheville) I'll make it a piont to meet you but seeing as I'm mainly straight my view may be biased.

'k. :) You should come up for DragonCon! Everyone should come to DragonCon...

i'm working on it. I'd volenteer and stuff.. just gotta find a place to stay. And that my friend is the rub.

I'm sure you are a good person and make a habit of volounteering at SF cons and all that, but don't make the mistake of thinking D*C is a con like other cons. It's for profit and it's goal includes beating out other conventions. The atlanta area con scene seems to be seeing a little uptick recently, now that D*C has stopped competing with them and has instead started going after bigger fish, but it was very strage to me that the city that was home to D*C had so little other con activity when I got here. Then I found out that if there was another local con, D*C scheduled opposite it until it went away. Go to D*C, enjoy D*C, but don't give management free labor. If you want to volounteer, there's local fan-run conventions that need your help more.

but con price.. $75 volonteer and it's free. 20 hours over the whole con.. but it's not to ibg of an issue as I have no where to stay in ATL and being in NC well... it would be a drive.

... it's the same weekend as our annual open house. Which people are apparently already buying alcohol in anticipation of. So you're all deprived of my scintillating wit for yet another year. :)

As I said yesterday, I'm not sure the two are mutually exclusive -- it seems perfectly logical that folks would want to hit on someone because of the fact that they're cool, or have interesting taste. Hell, I just can't imagine hitting on someone merely because she has a nice rack. So I'm not sure I necessarily see the conflict the way you do.

That's not to say that just because some guy is talking to you, he's hitting on you (and I wasn't with you guys for the video store incident). But I do think that if a guy sees a girl who's both physically attractive and has interesting tastes (say, he hears you talking about Sam Raimi, or somesuch), it increases the chances of him hitting on her.

Obviously, my first impression is tough to really call up, given all of the circumstances surrounding it. :-)

Yeah, I think you're kinda disqualified from this one. :)

But yeah, my impression re: the video store thing - Edie mentioned Hedwig and the Angry Inch, he recommended it and said it was robbed at the Oscars, I said "Blame Canada" was the closest Oscar was ever going to get to something controversial, he said what about Moulin Rouge, etc. He was so not hitting on me.

Actually, I was just going to say the same thing he did, really...

I would much rather credit this to something thinking I seem cool or like a good listener than someone thinking "whoa, nice rack." I want to believe that my personality makes more of an impression than my appearance.

The two are not mutually exclusive. I may think there are a lot of pretty women out there, but I'm not going to waste my time *talking* to them unless I think they're interesting, too.

I haven't met you, so I can't answer the initial question; I just wanted to add my $.02 on this part of it. :)

Your two cents are appreciated. :) *hugs*

Let me third [livejournal.com profile] iroshi and [livejournal.com profile] yendi's comments. I haven't met you, but whether I hit on somebody or not has everything to do with whether I think they're a cool person and much much less to do with whether I think they're the living embodiment of Aphrodite on earth.

Being interesting, straightforward, outgoing, etc. pushes many more of my buttons than "whoa, nice rack" (your words, not mine) :)

cheers,
Phil

Me too too!
I like a great rack and all, but if it's not attached to an interesting and cool person, I'm not going to hit on it.

Can't answer the original question, due to not having met you. Should I say yet? We seem to have friends in common who enjoy being somewhat social.

You can see yet! I'm really eager to meet [livejournal.com profile] sambear and [livejournal.com profile] technomom...

They am good people.

I just noticed in your interests list you have "boiled in lead", you must be ok people too.
Tuesday, June 11th, 2002 11:59 am (UTC)
We're interested in *lots* of things, most of which have little to nothing to do with each other - but yes, Celtic rock is one of the biggies. :)
Tuesday, June 11th, 2002 12:18 pm (UTC)
yeah, lots of interests, but you are the first person I've seen who listed BiL. I wondered briefly why it didn't highlight that and then remembered that I have no bands listed. Who else would you reccomend under that general heading?
Tuesday, June 11th, 2002 12:28 pm (UTC)
Ohhh... well, of course no one's *just* like them. Black 47 also rocks. Oysterband and Great Big Sea are a little lighter. I need to check out the CDs when I get home... I'll get [livejournal.com profile] yendi recommending as well.

Well, as 'song said, Oysterband is a must -- they were one of the first bands I discovered as a result of the LeadHeads mailing list.

Cats Laughing is defunct, but their lead singing triumverate included Adam Stemple (lead singer of BiL since Antler Dance). And his other band is the Tim Malloys.

Umm, I dunno. The thing is, no band sounds like BiL. I can think of other bands that some BiL fans and I like, but you may hate 'em -- most BiL fans enjoy The Flash Girls, and Steven Brust's solo album (he wrote three tracks on Antler Dance, and all the songs on Gypsy). And they tend to like the Waterboys and the Pogues, Wolfstone, Fairport Convention and any other Celtic rockers (in any of the loosely defined meanings of that term). They also like Lojo Russo, but she sounds nothing like BiL. Ditto Dead Can Dance.

Then again, I know BiL fans who can't stand each of the above artists. *shrug*

Even Amazon's no help -- the only rec I can get from them is The Flash Girls.

And I just found out that there's an official bootleg of the BiL concert from last year, which I now need to buy -- http://www.noside.com/Catalog/CatalogAlbum_01.asp?Album_ID=167

...says the man who, upon meeting me, handed me a diskette of Klingon porn...
