So. Atlanta people. What ought we to do for July 4th? My first instinct is to barbecue. Anyone want to come to a barbecue at our place?

Barbeque is always a good idea. When I was still in Athens our yearly tradition was 1) barbeque 2) watch Independence Day 3) drink. A lot. :)

Still not sure what I'm doing this year. If you get something together, I might be amenable to dropping by.

cheers,
Phil

My goof ... I posted this in the wrong place before!

"We *STILL* do those kinds of things here in the Classic City! Usually it's grill out, watch Star Wars, Star Trek, Independence Day, The Mummy, whatever the group chooses; follow that up with Talisman. Though on Memorial Day we tried the Star Wars Trivial Pursuit...have you been gone long from Athens? I moved here over 14 years ago."

I lived in Athens for about seven years -- three and a half for college, then another three and a half after I graduated. I moved to Atlanta about three years ago as of September (or perhaps it's four years. Losing track).

Our traditions live on, they've just been relocated to various different places. This year they'll be held in Stone Mountain at the home of my friend Ed's parents. :)

cheers,
Phil

Were you ever a part of the Athens "Gaming group of many names"? -- First there was Timelords, along came UGGS (1990 -- I know, I'm a founding member), then the two merged and became Alternate Realities, then "the ego that ate Athens" left town and we had Frontiers for a while, now there is the Gamer's Association at UGA...there may have been some names in between that I've missed. I've been a part of each of them at some point; came and went depending on real-world events in my life...or the fact that one of the above was simply a group for guys who wanted to play Magic and girls who wanted to sleep with them. I wanted to game...not be a gamer groupie and I never had an interest in Magic at all. Not that I had anything against sleeping with gamers -- creative gamers do make the best lovers. :-) But that leads me off track...I was just checking to see if we had crossed paths while you were here -- or if we had mutual friends.

Heh. [livejournal.com profile] deza asked me the same thing when she first added me to her friends list. :) No, I was never a part of any organized gaming groups, in Athens or anywhere else; just played with my friends periodically. (I objected violently to some of the personalities who ran Time Lords etc., Fannon being one of them (I expect that's who you're referring to as "Ego")). I haven't paper-and-pencil gamed much at all in the past five years or so, and all of those have been with friends.

Girls who wanted to sleep with gamers? There weren't any of that latter around when I was up there. Maybe I should have joined some of those groups after all. :)

cheers,
Phil

You nailed the "ego" on the head. BTW he's over your way these days! Run for your sanity! :-)

Never been to Athens! Atlanta's the first city in Georgia I've lived in...
