...and I know that my characters were jumping all over the timeline...

Here's a roughly-chronological list of the bits, for those with orderly minds.

Janos's scheming - he refers to Alanna as a child, so this is probably at least 20 years before our story begins. I don't get a sense of how old she is here, but she must be under 10.
Jessa falling for Marcus. She's in her early twenties.
Jeramie resting uneasily. He's in his twenties here. This is probably roughly concurrent with the above.
Jessa missing Fenris. Aww, Capri's just a wee thing! This has to be at least ten years ago.
Alanna deciding that Jessa has to die. Last-minute decision, maybe a week before the Purges.
What Capri wants. Just a very few years post-Purges - maybe only two. She's maybe only 15 here.
Napalm setting his bed on fire! Probably concurrent with the above; he's the same age as Capri.
Alanna trying to die - post-Purges.
Kier dancing with Ryan - post-Purges, because he's too much of a kid before.
Ditto Kier discovering fine dining - also because Capri's clearly living in confinement at this point.
Jason's computer idiocy - this is clearly an iMac in my head, which roots this around or after the Purges if the Purges are About Five Years Ago.
Shawn's arrival - as our story begins.
Fenris eating breakfast. As our story's happening, I s'pose. :)
What Julia wants - early Act 2. She's new-ish in the city.
Capri on Hot Girlsex with Julia - Act 2 or 3 of the story. A few years after we begin.
Julia tells Capri she loves her - I'm not sure if this is Act 2 or 3.
Fenris realizing Capri knows he's her birth father - very end of Act 2.
Capri telling Fenris she knows he's her father - maybe a week into Act 3.
Julia's nightmare. Act 3. She's actually dreaming this in the castle.

You're welcome. *nod*

[livejournal.com profile] eyes_of_cyrene is reading back through tagged Shayara entries, and this reminded me how infernally difficult it probably is to try to keep my world straight from my little snippets here and there. The snippets don't come out of me in order. And very few people outside my head know the full outline of the story in any precise detail.

I started timelining in JavaMoonkey last week - had to stop when I got all agitated. (Yeah. That was *that* day.) And it struck me as funny that I had this:

Creation
The Fall (preceded by this)
The diaspora (outlined in intro story on the website)
Establishment of the Sanctuary
Creation of [character]
The stirrings of the call to return (also outlined in intro story)
Establishment of the Council
Creation of the Hounds
Birth of Alanna
Dissolution of the Talthar Kithrayna
Formation of the Kirayth
Julia's activation (seen in Shooting Star Comics Anthology #6)
The Purges

And then Our Story Begins... Yes. Millenia of Stuff. That's ignoring whole chunks of story - this is 100% bare-bones. All of that. Oh, and then Our Story Begins. *headdesk*

And the reason I'm all floofy about timelining snippets I post is that I'm just playing; most of this stuff won't make it into the comic. A lot of it happens before Our Story Begins. It's just background. This needs to have happened to Fenris, or Jeramie, or Jessamyn, in order for events to be as they are when Our Story Begins. Never mind that you'll never meet Jessamyn. Things that happened to her as a teenager shape Fenris and the core of Kirayth, shape Jeramie, shape Capri... and I like to know.

So. That all happened before the story began.

Want to tag more, but Memories are down. Again. *eyeroll*

What comes next?

As Our Story Begins, the Talthar Kithrayna meets in secret, at the prompting of Kieran (see intro story on website). He pushes through a vote to search for a girl who may or may not exist - Julia ni'Tamra, fourth daughter of Katrina Stone and Stephen ni'Tamra, presumed stillborn until that flare four years ago. Because hard evidence that Alanna is the Lishaya is in very short supply - and if there is a Lishaya, Julia is the best candidate.

Mission goes to Tessa and her crew of nomads, who take on the job on their way to pick up a profoundly damaged young Dasaroi girl who will soon be calling herself Lyric.

And that's most of Act I: Split between Shayara itself and the escalating situation there, getting to know those characters, and Tessa and her crew on the road - particularly the developing bond between Napalm and Lyric.

And I don't think I'll be spoiling anything to say that the very last event of Act I = them finding Julia.

And I'll be closing the first TPB on a hell of a cliffhanger there.

But. Does that help any? What can I add?

From the beginning.... and I need to add to this, and keep it in detail.

I have it all in my head, and I don't know that I'm very good at keeping it straight for you guys.

And I'll likely do one of these with and one without spoilers. I already made [livejournal.com profile] irana almost-cry by showing her the death of her favorite character. Oops!

So this post is a marker. I'll continue on it when I get home. Leaving-for-appointment time snuck up on me.

EDIT: Okay. Here we go.

In the Beginning
The gods created their first child, Tiala na'Roth. After long years of studying her, they began to create more beings, with Tiala's help - first the Talthar Kithrayna, and then the rest of the Dasaroi.

The Dasaroi are humanoid - nigh-indistinguishable from humans. They were immortal, though, and gifted with abilities that we would term psychic, from empathy to telekinesis, and far beyond. The original Talthar Kithrayna were created as potential archetypes, representatives of seven Houses - each the leader - Kithrayn (m) or Kithraya (f) of their House. Many later-born Dasaroi are of the original seven Houses, but many are members of other, lesser Houses.

The Dasaroi, led by Tiala, their Lishaya, existed in peace for centuries.

No peace lasts forever.

Very few Dasaroi remember what transpired during the Fall. Those who do, don't speak of it. And no, even you, dear readers, still have no clue. :)

After the Fall, Tiala stood before her gods - her parents. Appalled at what their children had done to each other and to their world had done, they revoked the immortality of the Dasaroi and stripped them of the greater part of their abilities. Tiala begged for death and received it, but also received the new gift of her people - reincarnation.

The gods turned their faces from the Dasaroi, and they learned how to live without their greatly reduced powers. As time went on, another form of sentient life began to appear.

Humans.

The Dasaroi drew together and began to enclose their home. A circle around the grove that they had been born in, and a circle around their town. A stone wall, high and forbidding. They created the first city.

They called it Lishaya'ra - the home of the Lishaya, and of her people.

Several Hundred Years Later...

Long, long ago, before humans, another race was created... the first race. The Dasaroi. No one remembers quite how; all that's known is that they appeared one day on a fresh and new world. Their appearance was human in nature, but they were immortal and gifted with powers that we'd call psychic or psionic; these powers varied in variety and strength. The Dasaroi gradually formed Houses... gatherings of people with similar appearances and attributes. As time passes, the Houses grew accustomed to producing, say, short blonde healers and empaths or tall, dark elemental mages, and that became a House attribute in itself.

The Talthar Kithrayna, also known as the First Circle, was comprised of the leaders of the seven Great Houses and led by the leader of House Tamra. The heads of the other Houses loosely formed the Second Circle, but that was mainly for internal government purposes; the Talthar Kithrayna was the true governing body.

The Dasaroi enjoyed a carefree life for centuries... the event that triggered their downfall was...
-------------

Heh. Can't tell you that yet. To sum up, the thing that happened drove Tiala, the first Lishaya, mad, and massive carnage followed.

-------------
Finally, the "gods" had had enough. The immortality of the Dasaroi, along with the greater portion of their powers, was revoked. Tiala committed suicide not long after, hoping for absolution in her next life.

Gah. So tired. *whimper*

So okay. My next project is to get an absolute Shayara timeline set in stone. I get so involved with following tangents of the story that I'm afraid I'll forget to put some of the major stuff where it's supposed to go, and I really need to completely set everyone's ages. I'm thinking of revising the age of maturity from 16 up to 18, because I want these characters to start out older, but at the same time, I'm not sure I want Halloran to be *that* much older than Capri - I don't want it to be creepy when they get together. As it stands now, they're 11 and 16 the night of the purges. Halloran will have just reached maturity shortly before that night, because he has to be able to run his House on his own, so now we're looking at at least a 7-year age difference instead of a 5-year difference. I'm planning to have them hook up when Capri's 19, as things stand - which means I'll probably advance that to 20 or 21. I want it clear that she's been playing the field for a few years before she and Halloran settle down. But I still want her to be 11 when the purges occur; I need her to be prepubescent. And that might mean I'd have to let a lot more time elapse between the purges and the present day and between the present day and finding Julia than I really wanted to.

Also, I know that Kieran's still a minor the night of the purges, and I was originally planning on starting 4 years later - but I don't want him being a teenager, I want him in his early to mid 20s.

*sigh* Too complicated. I have too many people I need to set definite ages for. So, yes, my next project is the timeline/outline.
