So. I go to pick out Elayna's clothes this morning, and I say, hand on a cute white shirt with pink surfboards on it and pink capri pants, "Do you want to wear pink again today?"

Elayna: "No."
Me: "No?" (Pink is her absolute favorite color.)
Elayna: "We're supposed to wear uniforms."
I swallow my anger at The System. "Well, they said you didn't really *have* to start wearing the uniform until January."
Elayna: "Yeah, but everyone else wore theirs yesterday. I'm supposed to wear a white or yellow shirt and..."
Me, sighing. "Yeah. Yeah, I know." I grab a white shirt and khaki cargo shorts and hand them over.
Elayna: "Thanks, Mom."
Me: "Yeah. Glad you're able to conform like everyone else."

Dammit.

I hate this uniform policy. Hate it hate it hate it. And I want to push the envelope as much as I can....

...but she doesn't want to. And, bottom line, she's the one that has to be in school and be the only kid not in the uniform; and if she doesn't want to do that, it wouldn't be fair to push her.

Dammit.

I consoled myself by using bright purple ponytail holders for her pigtails.

More Elayna stuff

So when we picked her up yesterday, we noticed that two of her boyfriends Jacob and Patrick, were now in her class. Jacob was actually the first kid we saw... blood spattered all over his new white uniform shirt (see! white shirts + kids = bad idea!), clutching an ice pack to his nose. He had apparently run face-first into another kid while playing with a football at aftercare.

It didn't hit me til this morning....

Elayna's boyfriend has a football injury.

I couldn't stop giggling about that. Poor Jacob. He's the jock, and Patrick's the nerd.

But, yeah. On the way to the bus stop this morning, we were discussing her day yesterday, and she was relating that having her boyfriends in the class tended to distract her. I told her, "Don't get distracted by boys! That was a problem for me, too!"

Elayna: "How was it a problem, Mommy?"
Me, after discarding so many possible answers: "Ummm, well, I was so busy hanging out with the boys that I didn't get my work done as much as I should have. And I got in trouble."

She is just so very much like me...

Hey, shadesong, why are you posting so damn much today?

I'm starting work on issue #4. And starting issues is intimidating! So I procrastinate. Which is usually pretty easy at work, but there's absolutely nothing to do today. So I'm posting like crazy keeping my brain busy so I don't have to sit down with the blank page.

I need to stop that.

So. What have I been doing from 10 AM to now?

Labeling envelopes for the AP letters, sorting said envelopes, dealing with a fucking asshole whose behavior will later merit a separate post (I'm waiting to see what other shit he's gonna pull so I can cover it all at once)... lunch, during which I was interrupted six times to unlock offices, because no one's bothered to get their master keys yet but me... then the student workers went to lunch so, in between replying to comments and doing actual work, I had moments where my butt hit the seat for like less than 5 seconds in between jumping up to grab the phone.

I hate people today.

Except for you guys. Y'all are cool. You're exempt from my wrath.

*sigh*

I need a coffee break. I do not get a goddamn coffee break.

At least I get tonight as a writing night...

Got about a third of issue #4 done. The interactions I've written so far:
