It is cold out there...

It's Friday. Life is good. Life is very good. You know when you have these realizations, these perfect moments, that sing out that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing what you're supposed to be doing, that everything is true and right?

Yeah. That. Like [livejournal.com profile] stronae would say, "All is proceeding as foretold in the Dead Sea Scrolls." (Yes, I know he ganked it from Evangelion) (I get to see him in January, whee!)

Um. Friday. Questions. One inspired by [livejournal.com profile] chelona, The Artist Formerly Known As Rloveking.

What are you wearing?
Bottom to top: Black ankle boots, black socks, carpenter jeans, squooshy dark blue chenille sweater. Hair in pigtails. Usual jewelry.

What is your usual jewelry, anyway?
Rings on left hand: Silver claddagh, mood ring (the Vidicon's Harem ring), two slim silver rings stacked atop each other: top one has "try", "make", "express", and "accept" engraved on it. Bottom has "magic", "love", "peace", and "joy" on it; they turn to make phrases...
Rings on right hand: Faceted smokey quartz, double-layered silver band of Celtic knotwork, and faceted garnet (my only piece of gold jewelry).
On left wrist: My Until There's A Cure bracelet, and a silver cuff engraved on the inside with "One Day at a Time".
On right wrist: An Eeyore watch with a leather band.
Current necklace: Dark smokey quartz beads with silver spacers.

What are you reading?
At lunch: Touch, by [livejournal.com profile] murnkay. Next in the queue: Modern Magic by [livejournal.com profile] merovingian and Plan B by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - a Liaden book.
At home: Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, lent to me by [livejournal.com profile] murnkay.

And the inspired-by-[livejournal.com profile] chelona section:

If you were going to change your LJ username, what might you change it to?

and

If you were going to change my LJ username, what would you change it to?

Quite a bit.

I'm glad. :)

Y'know what I want?

I want a charm bracelet! I can fill it with charms to represent people I love, and parts of myself...a charm for me as a mother, as a lover, as a writer...charms for Elayna and [livejournal.com profile] yendi and [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat and all of my friends.... Oh, I want. A tangible reminder of who and what I am, and the love that surrounds me, chiming on my wrist as I go through my day. :)

[livejournal.com profile] one_woman_army just created a great new community called [livejournal.com profile] tell_herstory. In her words:
"This community is a forum in which to share herstory. It's just a space for everyone to share stories about the women they love, the women they know, the women they are. What did your mother always used to say? Are there any family recipes passed down through the women in your clan? Do you know a story about an amazing woman? If you have a cool story about a woman, a piece of women's folklore, poetry praising all that is Woman ;o), post it there! Join!"

Sounds nifty! Need to dig up a few of my older posts, like the Mah Jongg post, to repost there...

(repost!)

When I was a kid, my mother played Mah Jongg every Thursday night. She played with four other Jewish mothers. They'd rotate whose house they played at, so once a month, we had the women around the kitchen table, clacking down tiles, drinking cream soda and nibbling Hershey's Miniatures that mom set out in little glass bowls.

This was my idea of womanhood, what we were supposed to grow up to be; I always assumed that, as I grew older, I would learn to play Mah Jongg... I've been assuming this up until recently, imagining that, at some point, Elayna will help me fill the little glass bowls with Hershey's Miniatures and run off to play Barbies with so-and-so's daughter in her room, occasionally peeking in on us moms and being gently shooed away.

I've just had an epiphany.

I am never going to be a Mah Jongg mom. I've pretty much never had three female friends at the same time anyway - I hang out mostly with guys. And no one I know knows how to play Mah Jongg. And I don't have little designated glass dishes for the Hershey's Miniatures - I have a Sailor Moon apothecary jar for the Dove Promises.

I am going to be a D&D mom. I'll be sitting around the kitchen table, gaming, with men *and* women, some of whom are not parents, drinking Coke and coffee instead of cream soda. And that's the image of womanhood my daughter's going to grow up wth.

I like that. :)

I have a new space heater! I finally convinced my boss that my rickety old one was a fire hazard, and I have a Brand!New!Heater!; it just arrived from Office Depot! It tilts and swivels and has automatic shut off and lots of spinny dials, and, oh, I am going to call it George.

I am trying to decide whether I want to go to Sam's Club with my co-workers at noon.

Pros: Um. Stuff. They have books and DVDs and stuff. Plus, will get me out of the office for a few hours.

Cons: I don't know if they take Mastercard or Visa yet (they didn't last time I was there). And it would involve spending time with my co-workers.

If I decide to go, I'll be gone til like 2-3 PM. So I'm not ignoring y'all, I'm just gone. If I go.

" You're in the pump-up-your-personal-power phase of your cycle, Pisces. Please say the following affirmations. 1. "I am extremely successful in everything I do." 2. "I possess an inexhaustible supply of creative energy." 3. "The universe is generous and gives me everything I need." While these sweetly generic statements will be effective, they don't go far enough for a lyrical maverick like yourself. I suggest, then, that you add these more evocative affirmations. 4. "Every day I learn more about how to steal the peaches of immortality from the King of Dragons." 5. "I spit on the shoes of manipulative power mongers even as I dance for crazy delight in celebration of my liberated perceptions." 6. "I know exactly why poet Emily Dickinson wrote 'Soul at the White Heat,' not 'Ego at the White Heat.'" "
