So I noticed that Jack wasn't putting his tongue back in his mouth like at all.

And then I noticed the et cetera, to wit:

* Jack is usually extremely hyperactive; now he's just sitting on the table.
* His breathing is a bit labored.
* His front paws and chest are crunchyspiky from dried drool (OMG the drool), and when he tried to lick a paw, the lick was very desultory.
* Little foam on his tongue.
* He looks a bit unfocused.
* He's kinda stinky. But that could just be Jack.
* EDIT: Tried giving him treats; he gave a sniff and tried to lick one, but his tongue may be getting in the way. Didn't eat 'em.

Earliest vet appointment we could get was 4:30. EDIT: He *is* going to the vet. We made the appointment before I posted.

No changes in diet. We've been doing housecleaning, so I could see the dust getting to him re: breathing, but the tongue thing concerns me greatly. Also, he is just sitting here, and people who know Jack know that that is not the natural state of Jack!

So cat people, on a scale of 1 to panic...?

Jack awaits your feedback. (This is not a today pic.)

UPDATE: possible broken jaw. How does that even HAPPEN?

UPDATE: More current update.

I'm on the edge of my seat. I hope kitty's OK!

Don't panic but getting him to the vet.

It sounds like an allergic reaction to something that he either encountered or injested. I once had a dog that ate a wasp and there were all kinds of problems from that.

Sooner you get it checked out the sooner you will have peace of mind.

Yep - their earliest appointment was 4:30, so we have a little while of pacing and worrying. But he's definitely going in this afternoon.

I was wondering about the wasp eating thing. My cats found one a couple of days ago that was still rather sleepy. I was able to get it away from them, fortunately.

Getting stung in the mouth could cause those sorts of problems.

Goodluck!

That's not good...could be something as simple as a bad tooth or something caught in his tongue... could be bad.

I'd panic. Could be poisoning or even a stroke.

Make sure he's still drinking, if not be sure to get him to the vet asap.
Monday, April 18th, 2011 07:32 pm (UTC)
Good luck. He's in our Sarah's standard position (keyboard included), which hopefully counts for a positive something.

Oh, it's an old pic. Not today. He's drooling too much right now to be trusted over a keyboard.

Poor kitty. Wishing him and you the best at the vet this afternoon!

Panic is a waste of energy. Just keep him calm and happy until it's time for the cat carrier. In the meantime, do something brain-heavy to keep yourself from thinking about this too much. You don't know how simple or complicated this is so just breathe through the day as best you can. Worry does no one any good.

Don't panic because the cat KNOWS when you panic and then they get distressed and then it turns into this whirling ball of OMG WUT.

I send you good kitty thoughts, as I'm dealing with sick kitty over here, too. :(

THIS IS NOT THE WEEK FOR SICK CATS, WORLD. STOP THAT.

Geriatric arthritic cat wishes the Kow well.

I will panic for you so that you can stay calm.

He is already at the vet, so my contribution is totally superfluous, but: allergy, ate a bug or other Unfortunate Object, oral abscess.

Just updated... possible broken jaw. Augh.
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 02:32 pm (UTC)
Broken jaws in cats are fairly common because of how the cat jaw is -- there's a fissure in the middle, so that if kitty lands on his feet but bangs his jaw on the ground in the process, the jaw breaks evenly rather than shattering.

Does he typically jump from heights?

*good healing kitty vibes to Jack*
