We just got him back!

Summation: His teeth were for shit. He did not have a broken jaw! It's just that the abscess was so awful that it shifted one of his fangs to the point where he couldn't close his mouth because it wouldn't line up.

So he needed teeth pulled, poor kitty. But that is all he needed. They ran a bunch of tests, so we have fingers crossed that there's no underlying horrible thing.

But the cost was actually, miraculously, only ~$500. So we have this covered with the donations we already have. No auction necessary, and I'm taking down the PayPal button. I'll write WTD with the prompts I currently have, but won't be taking more for now. We actually have $546 in PayPal, but we can put the excess toward his followup appointment.

Knock wood that he doesn't have anything horribly wrong besides that. But they seem to think this could be all. I won't really relax until we have the test results, of course! But there is reason for cautious optimism.

Thank you all so much for helping out in all the ways you helped out. More updatery when we get test results back.

EDIT: He is sitting in my closet - his Safe Place - all whoa, I am so stoned right now.

OH HUZZAH!

This is the second cat I've heard of in the past couple of weeks that's needed emergency dental work, and it was just bad teeth.

Apparently, tooth removal has gotten cheaper/easier in the last 10 years *stares at the little grey cat who has no teeth at all behind her canines, and not all her incisors either*

Wouldn't it be nice if they communicated that they were in pain before, y'know, needing the ER and tricking vets into thinking that they have a broken jaw? Cats, I tell you.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 01:47 am (UTC)
Seriously. Need to have little communication boxes where they're trained to press buttons for things like, "Litter box is filthy, snap to it, monkey!" and, "Ow, fuck, ow."
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 01:29 am (UTC)
Oh that's wonderful!!!!!!!!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 01:31 am (UTC)
Poor Kitty.

Our Siamese ended up looking positively vampiric after his tooth removal.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 01:31 am (UTC)
So glad to hear that!! Here's hoping the test results don't show anything else funky and that Jack is feeling back to his normal self ASAP!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 01:41 am (UTC)
Awww, poor brave stoner kitty. I'm glad he's okay. :)

Yay! Hurray for things being way better than they could have been.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:05 am (UTC)
I am glad Jack is feeling better and that this did not take a bigger chunk of the family wallet. I remember having a cat who needed teeth out. He was not a happy cat...
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:05 am (UTC)
Good news! I hope he's all better soon.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:06 am (UTC)
OMG!!! Woo Hoo! He wasn't as bad as they thought??? That almost NEVER happens.

I am so glad. So glad. *sniffling*
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:59 am (UTC)
I know, right? Max was worse off than they'd thought, and that seems to be the way of things. I was actually momentarily speechless.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:14 am (UTC)
Yay, yay, yay for Jack being home and A-OK.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:19 am (UTC)
Aww, poor fuzzle. Glad to hear he is home & fingers crossed for everything else.

Oh I am so glad for good news for once.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:48 am (UTC)
Yay Jack!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:54 am (UTC)
Yay! Was he sent home with kitty morphine? My Max was weirdly gregarious while on the stuff.

Sometimes kitties just have really bad teeth. If you catch it early enough, sometimes they can be treated with antibiotics. Unusually stinky breath = time for tooth checkup.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 03:00 am (UTC)
Yep! He's not gregarious, he's just zoned out.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 02:56 am (UTC)
I am glad that the news is better than you expected. Best wishes for Jack's speedy recovery.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 03:09 am (UTC)

He is sitting in my closet - his Safe Place - all whoa, I am so stoned right now.

That's a beautiful ending to this episode :-)
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 10:41 am (UTC)
Hooray! I'm glad it's not as bad as it could have been, either financially or for Jack. Speedy healing thoughts to him!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 10:56 am (UTC)
Yay for Jack and Yay for you guys that love him! Sending out good vibes and energy that recovery goes well and all the results come back negative!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 12:07 pm (UTC)
Wow. A vet bill that was a fraction of what you expected? Amazing.
This should certainly help his nasty Jack-breath.
Mess with the stoned Jack for me? I miss his adorable stupidness.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 12:11 pm (UTC)
What wonderful news!!
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 04:36 pm (UTC)
I don't have time to read your zillion comments :) but I wanted to ask if the vet mentioned feline odontoclastic resorptive lesion (FORL). One of my cats has it and it requires that most of the teeth be pulled over time. The cat can live a full and high quality life, but feeding must be of the gooshy food variety. http://veterinarydentalcenter.com/catcase_1.htm

Basically, you just have to pay a lot more attention to kitty's teeth than normal and be prepared to spend money to get the affected teeth pulled. We keep an "Isis vet fund" saved up for when she needs extractions..
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 08:58 pm (UTC)
Oh, thank goodness it was teeth and not jaw! You can't pull out a jaw. Cats shouldn't have to be metal.

I wish kitties could be trained to use a Waterpik. (I realize this is where someone giggles and is all "you wish kitties could be trained? You naïve little thing!" but I am the size of a small house and I am somehow capable of wishes..)
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 09:30 pm (UTC)
That is good news indeed.
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 10:44 pm (UTC)
I'm so glad he is okay and it was not as bad as they thought!

I donated but did not yet submit a writing prompt because I was trying to think of one that would be awesome. Am I being too much of a pain in the ass if I submit one now?
Thursday, April 21st, 2011 03:36 am (UTC)
Glad to hear he's all right. Jet had an abscessed tooth so I know what that's like!
Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 09:39 pm (UTC)
Good news!
Sunday, May 1st, 2011 05:52 pm (UTC)
Awww Jack! I am so glad. (Even tho I see it went up another $250.) I looked ahead to find a Paypal button.
