Just thinking about all the books and music I've been pushing on my new guys...

Right, then. You. Yes, you, dear reader.

Explain yourself to me.

No, no, wait - there are rules!

Pick one book. One song. And one movie. Translate yourself through media. And tell me why that.

(I'll accept "top three" lists, but there must be a clear #1.)

Go.

I will write five pieces of Shayara flash fiction on the plane.

You can request characters (and specific moments, if you're familiar enough with my universe, but I don't guarantee you'll get them; the entirety of Act III is off limits due to me not wanting to tell you which of your favorite characters die horribly at the end of Act II), you can ask questions, you can give me one-word prompts.

But you have to do it by 1:00, which is when I leave for the airport. Because unless Logan all of a sudden has free wifi, I'll be offline from 1:00 til I land in Florida.

I'll post the fictionbits tonight.

Okay. Requests?

What questions do you find essential to getting to know a person?

What answers do you feel provide you with the most information about a person's psyche?

I have turned this post over to guest blogger Elayna. Elayna is eleven years old; please comment accordingly. She's a mature kid, so I'm not saying don't get technical. I'm saying don't get R-rated.

Without further ado, guest blogger Elayna (pictured)!

Today is Ask Me Anything day. Go for it.

Actually, I'll screen comments in case you want to ask me something non-public-like. I will be unscreening comments as I answer, so tell me if you want your comment left screened!

Also, I may voicepost the Mochi Song later. It's actually more of a Mochi Chant. But. Yes. I was pretty much flat on my ass all day yesterday, so I'm a bit restless today.

And this is a serious question, though funny answers are okay as well - just be aware that this is, in fact, research. :)

About cons.

What are your favorite sorts of panels? Imagine your ideal con schedule - what would you be attending?

And the biggie: If you could request a panel on absolutely anything, what would you request?

EDIT: Subset: If there's anything specific that you'd like to see me in particular talk about on a panel, tell me. :)

Icon madness!

You may have heard that LJ is giving us more room for icons. Up to 132, in the case of permanent accounts.

That's a lot of icons.

I am, as always, fascinated by your decisions - in why you choose to represent yourself with that particular little picture. I asked you a little while ago about your default icons... now I'm asking about your favorite icons.

Reply to this post with your favorite icon. Tell me why it's your favorite. If you have more than one favorite, please put your other favorites *in that comment* - don't do three comments. :P

Also - I have a bunch of readers who like making icons! If you have requests, post them... who knows, you may get shiny new icons!

Let's talk about naming.

You'll have noticed that I use aliases for some people on my LJ. The thousand-person spotlight? Not for everybody. (Spooky, at first. The Craftsman.) But sometimes I use aliases just because they suit the person. (The Scholar.)

It's funny how these things come about. Let's break that down...

Spooky. Those of you who know her know that there's no better nickname; this is the woman from whom, as the Scholar said, "it's Halloween all year long". And she calls me Story. :)

The Craftsman. He's using an alias because my sexfilter is a bit large for his taste. :) He chose his own name - "It's both a philosophy and a brand of sex toys", he says. :)

The Scholar. The Scholar is so named because Miss Spooky and I spent the first night of his visit impishly, crow-girlishly, calling him Professor as he speechified. He'd've been The Professor, save for the fact that I work at a university and wouldn't want anyone thinking I was talking about an actual professor!

So my question this Friday is this:

Given the opportunity to name yourself, what name would you choose?

And what would you name me?

What is your music?

Imagine you have up to ten songs to explain yourself to me, your heart and mind and views on the world.

What are those songs?

Why?

(I'll tell you mine when my hands are better.)

So there's a wishlist meme going around; you're supposed to list the ten things you want, in hopes that someone can fulfill your wish.

As a mental exercise - I want you to narrow that down to *three*.

What three material things do you want the most?

and

What three immaterial things do you want the most?

I will start you off.

Material
1. A house in Boston. Big enough for the lot of us. In an excellent school district. (Hey, if I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream big.)
2. A new iPod. Being without my music is driving me nuts.
3. A laptop, so I can write anywhere; I can write longhand anywhere, but it'd be nice to be able to work with and add onto a story without printing the whole thing out before I go to the coffeehouse.

Immaterial
1. Health. (For all of *you*, too.)
2. A job in Boston for Adam - that counts as immaterial, right? One that he'll love, and one that has good benefits.
3. The energy to pursue the things I want to pursue.

You?

(And now I go back to bed.)

Because I know I'd forget this if I held it til Friday...

What little inexpensive gift never fails to brighten your day?

We'd all love iPods and ponies, yes. But there are also those little things. Tell me something that costs under $5.00 - under $10, if you're really pressed - that just makes you beam when someone hands it to you.

This post prompted by the tin of Danish butter cookies the book buyer just handed me. Oh, I bounced. I particularly love the pretzel-looking ones, with the sugar-that-looks-like-salt on 'em. :)

Tell me about your first time.

This doesn't have to be about sex; I'm asking in a very general sense. Tell me about the first time you looked at the night sky and were actually able to pick out a constellation. The first time you got so lost in a book that you emerged blinking and disoriented, and needed an adjustment period before you could deal with the Real World again. The first time you realized you were different from the other kids. The first time you loved - the first time you lost. The first time you realized who you were, or who you wanted to be. The first time you had your favorite food, even.

This Friday Audience Participation is dedicated to the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] rhiannonhero, who is putting together an Amazon wishlist for her soon-to-be-baby...

What books did you love as a child?

What did you lose yourself in? What did you read til you had to tape the covers back on? What would you still pick up today?

Why?

I've asked you about your default icon, I've asked you about your chosen name... now I'm going to ask you why you're here in the first place. No, not in the cosmic grand scheme of things. But:

Why are you on LiveJournal?

Why do you keep an LJ? What is it for you - a diary? A community-building tool? A way to communicate?

How do you use it? What do you use it for?

Why LJ instead of Journalspace, BlogSpot, et cetera?

This has more relevance than just my curiosity; this is also LJ-panel-at-Arisia research so, as the six-fingered man said, "Tell me how you feel...and remember, this is for posterity, so please be honest." :)

Eviscerate your memory
Here's a scene
You're in the back seat laying down
The windows wrap around
To the sound of the travel and the engine
All you hear is time stand still in travel
and feel such peace and absolute
Stillness still that doesn't end
But slowly drifts into sleep...

Give me a memory. Any memory. In as much detail as possible. Reach back and touch something and show it to the world.

You've told me why you picked your default icon - why you chose that picture to represent yourself to LJ-at-large.

But what about the word you've chosen?

Tell me why you picked the username you did. What does it mean to you?

[livejournal.com profile] envoy and I were discussing the physical appearance of someone he hadn't met.

Envoy: "Does [Person] has photo icons?"
Me: "Yeah, but they're hella airbrushed, don't look much like [him/her]."
Envoy: "Well, everyone does that. Everyone chooses the absolute prettiest pictures of themselves for their icons."
Me: "...not me."

This evolved into a conversation about my default icon in particular. This icon isn't the prettiest picture of me. It actually makes me look pretty severe, which I'm not in person. And the only thing I really like about my face is my eyes, which you can't see at all in this picture. (I look more like this and this, but with glasses, and my hair and face are thinner now.)

So why this picture as my default icon?

Because I'm writing. And therefore, I'm more me in this picture than I am in any other. So it suits me to have this as my default.

This is me at my most *me*. When no one's around, this is who I am; I curl up and the pen comes out.

And that's how I choose to represent myself by default.

So. Audience participation time. Why have you chosen the default icon you've chosen? What do you feel it says about you? If you don't have a default icon, why not?
