Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] khaosworks and [livejournal.com profile] runnerwolf!

Hello to new readers[livejournal.com profile] clockwrk and [livejournal.com profile] mrf_arch!

Medical
The usual, but the exhaustion is still much worse than usual. Doing the AIDS Walk - not the best idea. Doing the AIDS Walk at that pace - a terrible idea. [livejournal.com profile] docorion will pace me next year, make sure I don't overdo.

Because it's not a matter of whether I can do something. If I'm determined enough, I can do anything for a short while. It's a matter of how much I'll pay for it later.

But I raised almost $700!

EDIT: Wordfuckery goin' on. Oy. ALSO EDIT: Coordination fuckery. Not so much with the walking. *sigh*

*squirm*
[livejournal.com profile] asim is mean.

Books! Also? My daughter rocks.
Adam and I have finished The Penultimate Peril, and are now waiting for the rest of you to do so so we can discuss it. *pokes [livejournal.com profile] gwynraven*

Elayna started it late. Why? Because we saw MirrorMask on the shelf. She picked it up and started reading it as I continued to browse SF/Fantasy...

Yes. She's been waiting for Penultimate Peril all year, but she set it down for Gaiman.

Well, we had to buy it. (And Woken Furies by Richard Morgan and A Place So Foreign and Eight More by Cory Doctorow for me because, as she has been a good girl, I have been a good mama.) And she chose to read it in the car. And during her snack. Instead of the book she's been clamoring all year for.

When I asked her why, she said, "Well, it's funny..." and she paused and considered. "And I like the way he uses language."

Oh.

*beam*

I could not in a million years have designed a better child than this. A more perfect child for me. True, she could be better about homework and keeping her room clean, but show me a kid who couldn't. My daughter appreciates the way authors use language.

It is so good to be me sometimes.

Generally I'd put more thought and work into a costume, but this'll be for work... which means it needs to be something I pull on in the ten minutes between dragging my ass out of bed and the shower and being hauled out the door.

The Jedi costume (sans cloak) was handmade by [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat; the Trek costume is Original Series (the red dress) and store-bought.

"How are you?"

How do you answer that question? How do you know how much someone wants to know? "I'm okay - you?"

It's a part-time professor who knows why I'm part-time now, knows I'm not healthy. "Are you really?" he asks.

I shrug. Not socially ept. "...I'm hanging in there." I have stories, man. I could keep you here for hours. Do you want to know about my heart? Do you want to know that I'm not far from going on IV fluids to keep some weight on me? Do you want to know that now, three hours into my day, just now do I have faith in my ability to walk a straight line down the hall? I don't want to inflict that on the casual observer.

He pauses, sympathetic. "You look like you're getting thinner again."

(Song trigger: Mimi's gotten thin/Mimi's running out of time/Roger's running out the door...)

That's right. He's not here often. This is not gradual for him. He's not seeing the pounds melt, fade. He's being jolted.

So I tell him how I am. Not in gory detail, mind.

But seriously - how do you ever really know? Is my default of "I'm okay" or "I'm hanging in there" dishonest, being as I'm not? Because what it is is that I don't want people to worry overmuch when there's nothing they can do, and I don't want to inflict this on people who are just being polite. I don't know. I'm not socially ept. How can you tell what people are really asking?

I actually am doing pretty well today. I just really need a nap. Which I'll have after I pick Miss Kid up, which will happen after my [livejournal.com profile] docorion-call. *nod*

Adam and I have been together in various forms, best friends to partners, for nine years.

This upcoming Monday is our first wedding anniversary.

Adam, in bed this weekend: "The first anniversary is the paper anniversary. You know what that means..."
In unison: "Books!"

*grin* Shopping trip at Amazon.com accomplished. He will find this pleasing. Oh, yes.
